Sedgman Awarded Contract for Jervois Copper Processing Plant in Australia
CIMIC Group company Sedgman has been awarded a design, procurement and construction contract by KGL Resources Limited (ASX: KGL) for the processing plant at the Jervois Copper Project in Australia’s Northern Territory.
The contract marks an important stage in the development of Jervois, one of the Northern Territory’s advanced copper projects. The project is expected to contribute to the supply of copper, a critical metal used extensively across electrical infrastructure, renewable energy systems, electric vehicles and other technologies supporting global electrification.
Under the contract, Sedgman will be responsible for delivering the Jervois processing plant and associated infrastructure. Its scope includes design and procurement activities, construction of the processing facility, commissioning and testing. The company will also deliver related infrastructure and services required to support the plant’s operations.
Procurement of long-lead process equipment and detailed engineering activities are already underway, allowing work on key components of the facility to progress as the project moves toward construction and eventual production.
The Jervois processing plant is designed to process approximately two million tonnes of ore per year. The facility will use conventional mineral processing methods, including crushing, grinding, flotation and thickening. The processing circuit is expected to produce a single copper concentrate for further processing and use in downstream applications.
The plant’s design incorporates established processing technologies intended to efficiently separate copper-bearing minerals from the mined ore. The combination of crushing and grinding will prepare the ore for flotation, where valuable copper minerals can be separated from other materials. Thickening will then be used as part of the concentrate handling process.
Sedgman’s appointment provides continuity for the Jervois project, as the company has been involved in its development for several years. Sedgman has worked with KGL since 2017, contributing technical and engineering expertise through multiple stages of project development.
Its previous involvement has included reviewing historical testwork, conducting and assessing metallurgical testwork, supporting pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, undertaking value engineering and contributing to front-end engineering design. Sedgman has also supported procurement activities related to the project.
This longstanding involvement gives Sedgman familiarity with the project’s technical requirements, processing characteristics and development history as it transitions from studies and planning into project delivery.
The Jervois project is located in the Northern Territory, where the development of mineral resources forms an important part of the regional economy. Copper production from the project would add to Australia’s role in supplying minerals required for modern infrastructure and energy technologies.
Copper is widely used because of its electrical conductivity and durability. Demand for the metal is associated with electricity networks, renewable energy generation, battery-related infrastructure, electric transportation and industrial applications. As investment in electrification and energy infrastructure continues globally, copper remains an important raw material for a wide range of industries.
For Sedgman, the contract expands its role in the Australian resources sector and builds on its experience in mineral processing and project delivery. The company provides engineering, project development, construction and operations services to the resources industry, with expertise across mineral processing and associated infrastructure.
The Jervois contract also represents the next stage of a relationship between Sedgman and KGL that has developed over nearly a decade. Beginning with technical and metallurgical work, Sedgman’s involvement has expanded through feasibility, engineering and procurement activities and now into the delivery of the processing plant.
As detailed engineering and long-lead equipment procurement progress, the project will move closer to construction and commissioning. Sedgman’s responsibilities will ultimately extend through testing and commissioning of the processing facility and its associated systems.
The planned two-million-tonne-per-year processing capacity establishes the central processing facility as a key component of the Jervois Copper Project. Through its continued involvement, Sedgman will support KGL in advancing the project from development and engineering into operational readiness and copper concentrate production.
