Cemex and Port Tampa Bay Celebrate Completion of $36 Million Aggregate Terminal Expansion
Cemex US and Port Tampa Bay, together with Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, have officially celebrated the completion of the newly expanded Cemex Aggregate Terminal at Port Tampa Bay, marking a major milestone for Florida’s growing construction and infrastructure sectors. The expansion project is expected to significantly strengthen the region’s supply chain for construction materials while supporting economic growth, infrastructure development, and housing affordability across the Tampa Bay area.
The upgraded terminal was completed through a combined investment of approximately $36 million, including $29 million funded by Cemex and an additional $7 million grant provided by the Florida Department of Transportation. The project substantially increases the facility’s capacity to receive, store, and distribute aggregates, which are critical raw materials used in concrete, asphalt, road construction, and numerous infrastructure projects.
The expanded facility is strategically positioned at Port Tampa Bay, one of Florida’s most important deepwater ports. Through its enhanced capabilities, the terminal can now efficiently transport and process aggregates imported from Newfoundland, Canada. The materials arrive via large cargo vessels docking at the port’s deepwater berths before being transferred through a high-capacity conveying system capable of moving approximately 5,000 tons of aggregate material per hour from ship to on-site storage.
According to Cemex, the upgraded terminal is expected to handle nearly 1.5 million tons of aggregates annually, depending on shipping schedules and maritime conditions. This increased throughput capacity is anticipated to play a critical role in meeting rising demand for construction materials as the Tampa Bay region continues to experience rapid population growth and urban development.
The availability of a stable and efficient aggregate supply chain is particularly important for Florida, where sustained economic expansion and population increases continue to drive large-scale residential, commercial, and infrastructure construction activity. With the completion of the expansion, the Port Tampa Bay location becomes the only Cemex site in the state that combines an aggregate terminal, cement terminal, and ready-mix concrete plant within one strategically integrated operation.
This consolidated infrastructure allows Cemex to streamline logistics and improve efficiency across multiple segments of the construction materials supply chain. By housing these operations in a single location, the company can better coordinate the movement of raw materials and finished products while reducing transportation complexities and enhancing service capabilities for customers across the region.
