STRABAG Completes Acquisition of Romanian Railway Specialist BAWI Construction

STRABAG SE has successfully completed the acquisition of 100% of the shares in BAWI Construction SRL, a Bucharest-based company specialising in railway infrastructure services. The transaction, initially announced in July 2026, has now reached completion following the receipt of all required regulatory approvals.

The acquisition strengthens STRABAG’s railway construction activities in Romania and expands the Group’s capabilities across the South-East European railway infrastructure market. BAWI Construction brings established expertise in railway construction and modernisation, as well as specialised works and in-house component production.

The addition of BAWI Construction is expected to increase STRABAG’s expertise and value chain depth in the railway sector. With its existing capabilities and local market presence, BAWI will complement STRABAG’s activities in Romania and support the Group’s plans for further development in the region.

Strengthening Railway Infrastructure Activities

BAWI Construction provides a broad range of services covering railway infrastructure development and maintenance. Its activities include construction and modernisation projects, specialised railway works and the production of certain components in-house.

This combination of services provides STRABAG with additional technical capabilities and resources that can be integrated into its wider railway construction operations. The acquisition also strengthens the Group’s presence in Romania, where railway infrastructure is undergoing significant investment and modernisation.

BAWI Construction had approximately 240 employees and generated an output volume of around €60 million in 2025. The company’s workforce and operational capabilities provide STRABAG with an established platform for delivering railway infrastructure projects in the Romanian market.

The completion of the acquisition follows the announcement made in July 2026. After the necessary regulatory approvals were obtained, the transaction was formally closed, transferring full ownership of BAWI Construction to STRABAG.

Growing Romanian Railway Market

Romania’s railway infrastructure sector has benefited from substantial investment in recent years, supported by national infrastructure programmes and European funding initiatives. Modernisation projects are focused on improving railway networks, upgrading existing infrastructure and supporting more efficient rail transportation.

The continued investment creates opportunities for companies with expertise in railway construction, modernisation and specialised infrastructure services. STRABAG’s acquisition of BAWI Construction positions the Group to participate in this market through an expanded local platform and broader technical capabilities.

The transaction also supports STRABAG’s wider strategy of strengthening its position in European infrastructure markets where long-term investment programmes are creating demand for construction and modernisation services.

Expanded Expertise and Value Chain

One of the key benefits of the acquisition is BAWI Construction’s combination of construction services and in-house component production. This gives the business capabilities across multiple stages of railway infrastructure delivery.

BAWI’s activities range from the construction of new railway infrastructure to modernisation and specialised works. Its in-house production capabilities can also support project delivery by providing components required for railway construction activities.

For STRABAG, bringing these capabilities into the Group expands its value chain and provides additional opportunities to combine engineering, construction and specialist railway expertise.

The acquisition also adds local knowledge and an established workforce in Romania. The 240 employees bring experience in the country’s railway infrastructure market and will form part of STRABAG’s expanded regional capabilities.

STRABAG’s European Construction Network

STRABAG SE is a European technology group focused on construction services and operates across the entire construction value chain. Its activities include planning, design, construction, operation, facility management, redevelopment and demolition.

The Group operates through a network of subsidiaries across European markets as well as other regions worldwide. With approximately 89,000 employees and an annual output volume of around €20 billion, STRABAG has a broad presence across the international construction industry.

The company works across multiple areas of construction, including transportation infrastructure, building construction and civil engineering. Railway construction is an important part of its infrastructure activities, making the acquisition of BAWI Construction consistent with its existing business operations.

STRABAG also places emphasis on innovation and sustainability across its construction activities. The Group is involved in more than 250 innovation projects and 400 sustainability projects, covering areas intended to improve construction processes and environmental performance.

Supporting Long-Term Growth

The acquisition of BAWI Construction is expected to support STRABAG’s long-term growth in Romania and the wider South-East European region. By combining BAWI’s local railway expertise with STRABAG’s broader construction capabilities, the Group will have an expanded platform for pursuing railway infrastructure opportunities.

Romania’s ongoing railway investment programme provides a market environment for continued infrastructure development. European funding schemes and public investment are supporting projects aimed at improving railway connections and modernising existing infrastructure.

With BAWI Construction now fully integrated into the Group, STRABAG can build on the company’s existing project experience, workforce and specialist capabilities.

The successful completion of the transaction marks another step in STRABAG’s strategy of expanding its railway infrastructure activities and strengthening its position in European markets.

With 100% ownership of BAWI Construction SRL, STRABAG now has an enhanced presence in Romania’s railway construction sector. The combination of BAWI’s 240 employees, specialised services and 2025 output volume of €60 million with STRABAG’s broader European network provides a foundation for continued participation in Romania’s railway infrastructure development.
