Skanska Signs $60M Additional Contract for New Hospital in Fort Myers
Skanska has signed an additional contract with Lee Health for the construction of a new hospital and medical office building in Fort Myers, Florida, expanding the scope of the company’s work on the major healthcare development.
The additional contract is valued at approximately $60 million, equivalent to about SEK 560 million. The contract value will be included in Skanska’s U.S. order bookings for the third quarter of 2026.
The amendment adds significant interior and building systems work to the overall project. The expanded scope includes interior build-out finishes as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing work associated with the West Bed Tower expansion.
The broader development is planned as a major healthcare campus featuring a new five-story hospital, a central energy plant and a medical office building with an ambulatory surgery center. Together, these facilities are designed to provide expanded healthcare infrastructure for the Fort Myers area.
Expanded Hospital Development
The full project includes construction of an approximately 38,600-square-meter (416,000-square-foot), five-story hospital. The hospital will form the central component of the development and will provide new space for healthcare services and patient care.
The project also includes a central energy plant, which will provide essential utility and energy infrastructure to support the hospital and associated facilities. Centralized energy systems are an important component of large healthcare developments because hospitals require reliable power, heating, cooling and other building services to maintain continuous operations.
In addition to the hospital, the development includes an approximately 11,600-square-meter (125,000-square-foot) medical office building. The building will include an ambulatory surgery center, adding outpatient surgical capabilities to the overall healthcare campus.
The combination of hospital, medical office and surgical facilities is intended to create an integrated healthcare environment where multiple medical services can operate within the same development.
Additional West Bed Tower Work
The latest contract amendment specifically expands Skanska’s responsibilities for the West Bed Tower expansion. The additional work includes interior build-out finishes and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
Interior build-out work is an important stage of hospital construction because healthcare facilities require specialized finishes, layouts and infrastructure to support patient care, clinical services and staff operations.
Mechanical systems are particularly important in healthcare environments, where ventilation, temperature control and air quality requirements can be more demanding than in conventional commercial buildings. Electrical systems must also support medical equipment, lighting, communications and other essential hospital functions.
Plumbing infrastructure will support patient care areas, clinical spaces, sanitation facilities and other operational requirements throughout the hospital.
By adding these activities to its contract, Skanska will take on a broader role in delivering the infrastructure and interior components required to bring the hospital facilities toward completion.
Investment in Healthcare Infrastructure
The Fort Myers development represents a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure in Southwest Florida. The project’s scale, including more than 500,000 square feet of combined hospital and medical office space, reflects the substantial construction requirements associated with modern healthcare campuses.
The hospital’s five-story configuration will provide a substantial amount of space for medical services, while the adjacent medical office building will accommodate additional healthcare-related functions. The inclusion of an ambulatory surgery center will further expand the range of services available within the development.
For Lee Health, the project represents continued investment in healthcare facilities and capacity. For Skanska, the additional contract expands its involvement in the development and adds to its U.S. order bookings during the third quarter of 2026.
Skanska’s Healthcare Construction Experience
Skanska has extensive experience delivering complex construction projects in the healthcare sector, where projects often require detailed coordination among architects, engineers, healthcare providers, specialty contractors and building systems teams.
Healthcare construction also requires careful integration of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems with architectural interiors and clinical spaces. The additional scope at the Fort Myers project will require coordination of these systems with the West Bed Tower expansion and the broader hospital development.
The contract amendment allows Skanska to continue working with Lee Health as the project advances through additional stages of construction. The company’s responsibilities will include delivering the newly added interior finishes and building systems alongside the existing project scope.
Project Scope
The complete development includes three major components: the five-story hospital, the central energy plant and the medical office building.
The hospital will cover approximately 416,000 square feet, while the medical office building will provide approximately 125,000 square feet of additional space. Combined, the two primary buildings account for roughly 541,000 square feet of healthcare-related facilities, excluding the central energy plant.
The medical office building will include an ambulatory surgery center, providing space for outpatient procedures and supporting services. The central energy plant will provide infrastructure necessary to support the operational needs of the wider campus.
With the additional $60 million contract now added to the project, Skanska’s scope will encompass key interior and building-system elements associated with the West Bed Tower expansion.
Continued Project Progress
The additional contract demonstrates the continued development of the Fort Myers healthcare project and represents another stage in the construction program. The expanded scope will enable work to progress on interior finishes and essential mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems required for the hospital expansion.
The $60 million contract, valued at approximately SEK 560 million, will contribute to Skanska’s U.S. order bookings for the third quarter of 2026. As construction progresses, the company will continue working on the hospital, medical office building and associated infrastructure as part of the broader Lee Health development.
The completed healthcare campus is expected to provide modern hospital, outpatient and medical office facilities, creating a substantial new healthcare destination in Fort Myers, Florida.
