Ground freezing is an advanced geotechnical engineering method that temporarily converts water-bearing soil into a solid, frozen mass before excavation begins. The process involves installing a network of freezing pipes into the ground and circulating refrigerants that lower the surrounding soil temperature below freezing.
As moisture within the soil freezes, the ground becomes significantly stronger and more stable while simultaneously preventing groundwater from entering the excavation area. This creates a temporary but highly effective structural support system that enables engineers to safely excavate underground connections through otherwise challenging geological conditions.
