Thiess Secures Long-Term Mining Services Contracts in Mongolia

Thiess Secures Two Five-Year Mining Services Contracts in Mongolia

Global mining services provider Thiess has secured two five-year contracts in Mongolia, expanding its role in the country’s mining sector and strengthening its long-standing relationships with major industry partners. The agreements cover underground mining services at the Oyu Tolgoi Mine and asset management services at the Ukhaa Khudag Mine.

Under the contracts, Thiess will work with the Thiess-Khishig Arvin Joint Venture (TKAJV) at Oyu Tolgoi, a major copper-gold operation managed by Rio Tinto, while providing Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) asset management services for Energy Resources at the Ukhaa Khudag Mine.

The awards build on Thiess’ established operational presence in Mongolia, where the company has been active since 2007. During this period, it has developed local capabilities and delivered mining, maintenance and related services across several projects throughout the country.

The new agreements are expected to support ongoing mining operations, strengthen workforce development and provide technical and operational expertise to meet the requirements of both mine sites.

Underground Mining Services at Oyu Tolgoi

Under the five-year contract at Oyu Tolgoi, Thiess will deliver underground mining services through the TKAJV. The work will include underground development, installation of ground support systems and construction of infrastructure required for block cave mining operations.

These activities are important to the development and continued operation of underground mines, where access development, ground stability and supporting infrastructure play essential roles in maintaining safe and productive operations.

The contract will support the continued development of Oyu Tolgoi, one of the world’s largest copper-gold mining operations. As demand for copper remains important to industrial production, electrification and infrastructure development, projects of this scale require specialized mining services and reliable operational support.

Thiess’ responsibilities will involve delivering underground development work and constructing the infrastructure needed to support mining activities. Ground support installation will also form part of the scope, helping address the stability requirements associated with underground excavations.

The agreement further strengthens Thiess’ existing involvement at Oyu Tolgoi. The company has operated at the mine through the TKAJV since 2016, building experience and local capability in underground mining services.

The latest contract award provides continuity for the joint venture and extends its role in supporting the mine’s ongoing development.

Workforce Expansion and Employment Opportunities

The Oyu Tolgoi contract is expected to create more than 110 new jobs over the coming months as Thiess increases its workforce to meet project requirements.

The workforce is projected to reach almost 800 people by the end of the five-year contract term. If achieved, this would make Oyu Tolgoi Thiess’ largest underground mining operation globally.

The anticipated workforce growth reflects the scale of the underground mining services program and the operational resources required to deliver the contracted activities.

Recruitment and workforce development will be important as the project progresses. Additional personnel will help support underground development, ground support installation, infrastructure construction and associated operational requirements.

The expansion also represents an opportunity to build on the company’s existing in-country capabilities and contribute to employment within Mongolia’s mining industry.

Thiess’ long-standing presence in the country provides a foundation for delivering the new scope while continuing to work with local partners and project stakeholders.

Asset Management Services at Ukhaa Khudag Mine

The second five-year agreement involves Energy Resources and covers asset management services at the Ukhaa Khudag Mine.

Under the contract, Thiess will provide services for the site’s Coal Handling and Preparation Plant. CHPP facilities are used to process coal and prepare it for subsequent handling, transportation or use, making reliable plant performance important to overall mining operations.

The contract scope includes asset management, supply chain management, technical support and planning services. These functions will help support equipment availability, maintenance coordination and the efficient operation of the processing facility.

Asset management services play a significant role in mining operations by helping operators maintain equipment, manage maintenance requirements and plan resources effectively. Coordinated technical and supply chain support can also help address operational challenges and improve the reliability of plant systems.

Through this agreement, Thiess will contribute its mining services and maintenance expertise to support Energy Resources’ operational requirements at Ukhaa Khudag.

The award also extends the companies’ long-standing relationship. Their continued collaboration reflects a shared focus on safety, operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Strengthening Long-Term Partnerships in Mongolia

The two contracts demonstrate Thiess’ continued commitment to Mongolia’s mining industry and its focus on providing specialized services across different stages of mining operations.

At Oyu Tolgoi, the company will concentrate on underground development and supporting infrastructure, while the Ukhaa Khudag agreement will focus on plant asset management and operational support. Together, the contracts expand Thiess’ involvement in both underground mining and coal processing services.

The agreements also build on relationships established over several years. Thiess’ presence in Mongolia dates back to 2007, while its work at Oyu Tolgoi through the TKAJV began in 2016. The new contracts extend this experience and provide a basis for continued collaboration with key mining industry partners.

By combining technical expertise, workforce development and asset management capabilities, Thiess aims to support the operational requirements of both projects over the next five years.

Supporting Mining Operations and Future Development

The contracts represent an important addition to Thiess’ mining services portfolio in Mongolia. The Oyu Tolgoi agreement will support underground mine development and is expected to expand employment opportunities, while the Ukhaa Khudag contract will provide asset management and technical services for a key coal processing facility.

As both agreements progress, the company will focus on delivering the contracted services in line with operational requirements and its stated commitments to safety, reliability and continuous improvement.

With an established local presence and long-term relationships across the sector, Thiess is positioned to continue contributing mining and maintenance expertise to Mongolia’s mining industry through these five-year agreements.
