Veenstra & Kimm Joins Kleinfelder to Strengthen Midwest Reach
The Kleinfelder Group, Inc. a leading firm in engineering, design, construction management, construction materials inspection and testing, and environmental professional services, has officially announced the acquisition of Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. (“V&K”), a well-established engineering firm based in the Midwest. This strategic move significantly strengthens Kleinfelder’s national footprint by establishing its presence in the Midwest and advancing its growth objectives through enhanced service delivery and regional expansion.
Strategic Midwest Expansion
“This marks an exciting new chapter for Kleinfelder,” said Louis Armstrong, President and Chief Executive Officer of Kleinfelder. “With the addition of V&K, we are expanding into the Midwest region with a partner that shares our values and vision. V&K’s impressive legacy and commitment to exceptional service will enable us to provide increased value to our clients, employees, and the communities we serve.”
Veenstra & Kimm, founded in 1961 and headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa, has built a strong reputation over six decades for delivering high-quality engineering and design solutions. The firm services both public and private clients across key sectors, including transportation, water resources, land and site development, and municipal infrastructure. Its operations span nine offices throughout Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri, giving Kleinfelder an immediate and substantial presence in the Midwest.
A Natural Cultural and Strategic Fit
From the perspective of V&K leadership, the integration into Kleinfelder is a logical and strategic step forward. Steve Thompson, V&K’s Board Chairperson and Chief Operating Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the future. “For V&K, this transaction feels like a natural evolution. Our cultures are deeply aligned—we both value employee development, client trust, and community engagement. Joining Kleinfelder gives us access to a broader suite of resources and capabilities that will allow us to serve our clients even more effectively.”

Thompson will lead the newly established Midwest Division within Kleinfelder, ensuring continuity of leadership and service delivery as the two firms integrate. Existing V&K offices will continue operations under the Kleinfelder umbrella, maintaining the trusted relationships they’ve built over decades.
Enhanced Service Capabilities and Growth Potential
The acquisition adds valuable capabilities to Kleinfelder’s already robust portfolio. With V&K’s experience in municipal services, land development, and water infrastructure—particularly in rural and mid-sized communities—Kleinfelder can now offer even more tailored and localized services across the Midwest. This complements Kleinfelder’s strong national and international offerings, which include specialized engineering, environmental consulting, construction oversight, and project management services.
The expanded reach is expected to unlock new growth opportunities for both firms. By combining V&K’s regional knowledge with Kleinfelder’s scale and technical depth, the company is better positioned to pursue large-scale infrastructure and environmental projects while continuing to serve long-time clients with the personal attention they expect.
Continued Momentum in M&A Strategy
This acquisition marks Kleinfelder’s seventh merger or acquisition since 2019, underscoring the firm’s disciplined and intentional approach to growth. Each transaction has supported Kleinfelder’s strategic vision: to expand organically while supplementing its capabilities and market reach through partnerships with firms that share its employee-focused culture and client-first mindset.
Kleinfelder’s commitment to targeted growth has allowed it to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) landscape. As infrastructure demands rise and environmental standards tighten, firms with diverse, scalable, and innovative service offerings are positioned to thrive. With this in mind, the acquisition of V&K is not only about expanding geography but also about enhancing Kleinfelder’s ability to respond to complex infrastructure and environmental challenges with agility and local insight.

A successful transaction of this scale involves comprehensive advisory support. On the buy-side, Kleinfelder was advised by Morrissey Goodale, with legal counsel provided by Winston & Strawn LLP. KPMG supported the deal with transaction advisory and tax services. On the sell-side, V&K was supported by PSMJ Resources, Inc., with legal counsel from Donahue Fitzgerald LLP and transaction and tax advisory from Denman CPA.
