AECOM, the world’s trusted infrastructure consulting firm, announced today that it has been selected by the HKSAR Government Highways Department to provide design and project supervision services to widen the Yuen Long Highway in Hong Kong. In this role, AECOM will help increase the traffic capacity on the three-kilometer-long section between the Lam Tei Quarry and Tong Yan San Tsuen Interchange to minimize congestion and cater to the future needs of the city’s 2.5-million-resident Northern Metropolis development.
“We are excited to apply our expertise in delivering bold, environmentally-conscious roadway projects to support Hong Kong’s large-scale developments in the Northwest New Territories,” said Ian Chung, chief executive of AECOM’s Asia region. “This project is another great example of how our Sustainable Legacies strategy comes to life. Together, we will help realize the economical and sustainable land use prioritized in Hong Kong’s 2030+ strategy to leave lasting, positive impacts on the City’s communities and infrastructure.”
AECOM’s role includes the design and project supervision for civil, geotechnical landscaping road and drainage, electrical and mechanical, traffic control and surveillance system (TCSS), modification of signage, traffic lights and other roadside equipment, the re-provisioning of relevant facilities, and environmental mitigation measures.
“We are honored to expand our contributions to Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis project, delivering the expanded road infrastructure needed to reduce travel times, relieve traffic congestion, and sustain this thriving new community,” said Stephen Lai, senior vice president and director of operations for AECOM, Hong Kong. “Beyond increasing local opportunity and connectivity, this work will help to continue to attract residents and visitors to the wider metropolitan area and meet the city’s long-term transportation demands.”
By widening a key section of the Yuen Long Highway from a dual three-lane to a dual four-lane carriageway, this major road project will enhance connectivity between future developments of the northwest New Territories and the commissioned Route 11. Upon completion, it is expected to stimulate economic growth, improve the quality of life for residents and commuters and provide faster and more efficient transportation to the region.
