LP Scales Down OSB Operations at Jasper

LP Reduces OSB Production at Jasper, Texas Plant Amid Soft Market Demand

LP Building Solutions (LP), a leading manufacturer of high-performance building products, has announced plans to indefinitely curtail oriented strand board (OSB) production at its Jasper, Texas, manufacturing facility beginning in October 2026.

The decision comes as the company responds to softer demand in the OSB market and reviews production requirements across its broader manufacturing network. The Jasper facility has an annual production capacity of approximately 475 million square feet on a 3/8-inch basis, making it an important component of LP’s OSB production system.

The company said the move is intended to align manufacturing output with current market conditions while improving operational efficiency and maintaining flexibility to respond when demand strengthens.

Responding to Changing OSB Market Conditions

OSB is a widely used engineered wood product in residential and commercial construction. It is commonly used for wall and roof sheathing, flooring and other structural applications. Demand for OSB is closely connected to construction activity, particularly housing starts, remodeling and other building projects.

With market demand currently softer, LP has undertaken a review of production requirements across its manufacturing footprint. The assessment considered several factors, including operating expenses, capital investment requirements, transportation and logistics, and the long-term utilization of its manufacturing assets.

Following the review, the company determined that reducing production at the Jasper facility was an appropriate response to current market conditions.

LP CEO Jason Ringblom said the company needs to align OSB production with demand while navigating a challenging near-term environment.

“Current market conditions require us to align OSB production with demand,” Ringblom said. He added that the company remains confident in its broader strategy and its ability to generate long-term value.

According to LP, taking action during the current market cycle will allow the company to operate more efficiently while preserving the ability to increase production if market conditions improve.

Strategic Approach to Manufacturing Capacity

The Jasper decision reflects the broader challenges facing manufacturers of construction materials as they balance production capacity with fluctuating market demand.

Maintaining manufacturing facilities at full capacity can become increasingly difficult when demand declines. High operating costs, transportation expenses and ongoing capital requirements can affect the economics of individual plants.

By adjusting production levels, manufacturers can better align output with customer requirements while managing costs across their overall networks.

LP said it will continue to monitor market conditions and evaluate production requirements throughout its system. The company will also consider opportunities to restart curtailed capacity when economic and market conditions support increased production.

This approach provides LP with flexibility to respond to changes in construction activity and OSB demand without permanently eliminating the Jasper facility’s production capabilities.

Jasper Team Recognized for Contributions

While the production curtailment will have a direct impact on employees at the Jasper facility, LP emphasized that the decision is not related to the performance or commitment of the local workforce.

Ringblom specifically recognized the Jasper team for its contributions to the company over many years.

LP said it understands the impact the production change will have on employees and is committed to helping affected team members navigate the transition.

The company plans to provide job-search assistance and career-transition support. Employees will also receive help identifying and applying for available positions at other LP facilities.

The support is intended to provide affected workers with opportunities to continue their careers within LP where positions are available.

Impact on the Building Materials Industry

The decision comes amid an evolving environment for the construction and building-products industry. Manufacturers across the sector continue to monitor changes in residential construction, housing affordability, interest rates, remodeling activity and broader economic conditions.

OSB demand is particularly sensitive to housing construction because the material is extensively used in structural applications throughout the building process.

When residential construction activity slows, demand for structural wood products can also come under pressure. Conversely, stronger housing starts and increased construction activity can create additional demand for OSB and other engineered wood products.

LP’s decision to curtail production at Jasper therefore reflects the company’s effort to respond to current market dynamics while maintaining the flexibility needed for a potential recovery.

Maintaining Long-Term Flexibility

Although production at Jasper is expected to be curtailed indefinitely beginning in October 2026, LP has not indicated that the facility is being permanently closed. The company will continue to assess market conditions and determine appropriate production levels across its manufacturing network.

The distinction gives LP flexibility to respond if demand for OSB improves. Should market conditions become more favorable, the company can evaluate whether restarting production at Jasper or other curtailed facilities is economically justified.

For LP, the strategy is focused on managing the current market cycle while protecting the long-term strength of its manufacturing network.

The company’s latest decision highlights the importance of flexibility in the building-products sector, where manufacturers must continually balance production capacity, operating costs and customer demand.

As the construction market evolves, LP will continue monitoring market conditions and adjusting its operations accordingly. For the Jasper facility and its employees, the coming months will focus on managing the transition while exploring opportunities within LP’s wider manufacturing network.

The move demonstrates how building-material manufacturers are adapting their production strategies to changing market conditions while seeking to preserve capacity and operational flexibility for future demand.
