The project is expected to serve as a key supplier within the expanding electric vehicle battery ecosystem, particularly as North American manufacturers seek secure and localized supply chains for critical materials.
Nouveau Monde Graphite has already secured several important commercial agreements supporting future production. These agreements include partnerships with Panasonic Energy, the Government of Canada, and Traxys North America.
Together, these agreements account for more than 70 percent of the project’s anticipated production capacity, providing a strong commercial foundation for long-term operations.
Advancing a Vertically Integrated Battery Materials Platform
In addition to the Matawinie mining operation, Nouveau Monde Graphite continues advancing plans for its downstream battery material facility in Bécancour.
The proposed plant is designed to process graphite into battery-grade materials used in lithium-ion battery anodes. The company aims to reach a final investment decision for the Bécancour facility during the second half of 2026.
The planned facility would initially have a production capacity of 13,000 tonnes annually dedicated to supporting Panasonic Energy’s offtake requirements.
This vertically integrated approach is intended to strengthen North America’s domestic battery materials ecosystem while reducing reliance on overseas suppliers.
Long-Term Employment and Regional Development
Beyond its industrial significance, the integrated project is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits across Quebec and Canada.
During the construction phase, the development is anticipated to generate several hundred jobs spanning engineering, construction, logistics, manufacturing, and related services. Once operations are fully established, more than 300 permanent, high-quality jobs are expected to be maintained.
