Students at The Ongar Academy in Ongar are preparing to transform their outdoor learning environment after receiving a £5,000 grant through the Community Champions scheme supported by Charles Church. The funding will allow students and staff to enhance several areas of the school grounds, creating greener and more welcoming spaces that support both learning and recreation.

The initiative reflects a growing interest within the school community in outdoor education and the benefits of spending more time learning in natural environments. A group of students who regularly participate in outdoor learning activities has been leading the plans for the project. Their proposal focuses on improving parts of the playground and surrounding green spaces to create areas where students can study, relax, and socialize during the school day.

One of the key elements of the project involves replanting sections of the playground to introduce more greenery and natural features. By adding new plants, flowers, and landscaping elements, the students aim to create an environment that feels more vibrant and welcoming. The upgraded space will provide students with a pleasant area to gather during breaks and lunchtime, encouraging outdoor activity and interaction among classmates.

The funding will also be used to enhance the school’s pond area, which is located on the Year 7 field. This area already plays an important role in the school’s environment, particularly for students who are beginning their first year of secondary education. The pond area serves as a quieter and more relaxed space where new students can gradually adjust to the transition from primary school to the larger and busier setting of high school.

Through the planned improvements, the pond area will be revitalized to make it more attractive and accessible for students. Landscaping work will help restore the natural features of the site while also making it safer and easier for students to enjoy. Teachers plan to use the enhanced area as an outdoor classroom where lessons related to nature, science, and environmental awareness can take place.

The funding for the project was provided through the Community Champions program, an initiative designed to support local community groups and organizations. The program is associated with Charles Church, a residential developer that is currently undertaking a nearby housing project. The company recently began work on the De Lucy Place development, which will deliver 129 new homes in the town.

Because the new housing project is located close to the school, the company saw an opportunity to support the local community by investing in initiatives that benefit students and residents. The contribution to the school reflects a broader effort by developers to work collaboratively with communities when building new housing projects.

Jonathan Sands, head teacher of The Ongar Academy, expressed his appreciation for the donation and the opportunities it will create for students. He noted that the funding will enable students to expand their outdoor learning experiences while also improving the school environment for everyone.

Sands explained that the project will allow students to take a more active role in shaping their surroundings and creating spaces that they can enjoy during their time at school. Mary Dadd, a councillor for the Ongar ward in the Epping Forest District Council, attended a presentation ceremony at the school where the funding was formally announced.
