Budimex Wins GAZ-SYSTEM Compressor Station Contract

Budimex Secures Major Contract with GAZ-SYSTEM to Strengthen Poland’s Energy Security

Budimex has signed a significant agreement with Gas Transmission Operator GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. for the delivery of a strategic infrastructure project aimed at enhancing Poland’s energy security. The contract covers the construction of a state-of-the-art gas compressor station in Lwówek, located in the Wielkopolska province, along with the expansion and modernisation of the existing transmission hub. This new development represents another milestone in Budimex’s growing portfolio of critical gas infrastructure investments and marks the fifth joint project between the two companies.

The investment plays a key role in ensuring the stable operation of Poland’s gas transmission system. By maintaining appropriate pressure levels in the gas pipelines, the newly constructed infrastructure will help guarantee uninterrupted and secure gas supplies to essential sectors of the national economy. As energy resilience becomes increasingly important across Europe, projects such as this reinforce Poland’s ability to safeguard its energy independence and operational continuity.

Project Value and Timeline

The total maximum net value of the contract amounts to PLN 481.2 million. Under the terms of the agreement, Budimex will complete the project within 23 months from the date of signing. The relatively tight schedule reflects both the urgency and the strategic importance of the investment.

This timeline encompasses comprehensive design, construction, installation, modernisation, and integration works. The scale of the undertaking highlights Budimex’s technical expertise and operational capacity in executing complex, large-scale infrastructure projects under demanding deadlines while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards.

Scope of Work: Building a Modern Gas Compressor Station

The project includes the development of a modern gas compressor station equipped with advanced systems and supporting infrastructure. One of the central components of the investment is the construction of three compressor units with a total installed capacity of approximately 24 MW (3 x 8 MW). These units will ensure efficient gas compression and transmission, supporting stable pipeline pressure and system reliability.

In addition to the compressor units, the scope of work includes the construction of DN 1000 MOP 8.4 MPa connection units to ZZU Zębowo on the SGT DN1400 pipeline. These connection units will integrate the new compressor station with the broader transmission network, improving operational flexibility and system efficiency.

Budimex will also modernise the existing ZZU DN1400 gas pipeline infrastructure, including the replacement of a linear valve. This modernisation work is essential to align the current infrastructure with the upgraded system parameters and to enhance safety and operational performance.

Expansion of Transmission Infrastructure

Beyond the compressor station itself, the project encompasses the construction of two DN 1000 MOP 8.4 MPa connection gas pipelines equipped with a direction-switching system. This feature will allow for greater adaptability in gas flow management, improving the resilience and responsiveness of the network to changing demand patterns.

The construction of a measurement and regulation station on the SGT system is another critical component of the project. This station will enable precise monitoring and control of gas flow parameters, ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards while optimising system performance.

Additionally, Budimex will undertake demolition, expansion, and reconstruction works to connect the newly designed elements with the existing transmission infrastructure. These integration works are particularly complex, as they require careful coordination to maintain continuous operation of the gas network during construction.

The project also includes the construction of a two-way KSP measuring station, further strengthening the system’s monitoring capabilities and enhancing its operational reliability.

Strategic Importance for Poland’s Energy Security

The first stage of the Lwówek Gas Compressor Station represents a breakthrough investment in Poland’s gas infrastructure. By improving the stability and efficiency of gas transmission, the project will contribute directly to the country’s energy security framework.

Gas compressor stations play a vital role in long-distance gas transportation. They ensure that gas maintains sufficient pressure to travel through extensive pipeline networks. Without such facilities, the continuity of supply to industrial plants, power generation facilities, and households would be compromised. The Lwówek investment strengthens the backbone of Poland’s transmission network, supporting both domestic supply and regional energy integration.

In the broader geopolitical and economic context, enhancing transmission infrastructure also reduces vulnerability to supply disruptions and supports diversification strategies. The Lwówek compressor station will therefore contribute to long-term national resilience.

A Strong Partnership: Fifth Joint Project with GAZ-SYSTEM

This investment marks the fifth joint project delivered by Budimex in cooperation with GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. Over the past decade, the two companies have built a strong working relationship based on mutual trust, operational excellence, and shared strategic objectives.

Between 2016 and 2025, Budimex was responsible for the construction of several major gas pipeline projects across Poland. These include:

  • The DN1000 Strachocina – Polish Border (Poland-Slovakia) gas pipeline is approximately 61 kilometres in length.
  • The DN1000 Czeszów – Kiełczów gas pipeline is approximately 32.5 kilometres long.
  • The DN1000 Goleniów – Ciecierzyce gas pipeline is approximately 122 kilometres long.
  • The DN700 Rembelszczyzna – Mory gas pipeline, approximately 28.5 kilometres in length.

The total value of these completed projects exceeds PLN 1 billion, underscoring Budimex’s significant contribution to the development of Poland’s transmission network.

Leadership Perspective

Commenting on the contract, Maciej Olek, Member of the Management Board of Budimex SA and Chief Operating Officer of Railway, Energy and Industrial Construction, emphasised the strategic importance of the renewed collaboration.

He noted that returning to cooperation with GAZ-SYSTEM on this investment confirms that the established operating model and mutual trust between the companies translate into high-quality project execution. He also highlighted that Budimex’s extensive experience in gas, energy, and industrial investments enables the company to act as a responsible and reliable partner in projects of strategic national importance.

According to Olek, the company’s expertise allows it to use resources efficiently while genuinely strengthening Poland’s energy security.

Budimex’s Expertise in Energy and Industrial Construction

Budimex has built a strong reputation over many years in delivering complex energy and industrial projects. The company consistently executes investments that require adherence to the highest safety standards, technical precision, and regulatory compliance.

Projects involving critical infrastructure demand rigorous planning, risk management, and coordination with public authorities and network operators. Budimex’s track record demonstrates its capability to meet these demanding requirements while maintaining operational excellence.

By securing the Lwówek Gas Compressor Station contract, Budimex once again reinforces its position as a leader in Poland’s construction market and a key contributor to the country’s critical infrastructure development.

Strengthening the Future of Poland’s Gas Infrastructure
