Turner and Pike Construction Services Embark on the $650M Transformative Expansion Project at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Strong Memorial Hospital
Turner Construction Company and Pike Construction Services marked the commencement of the groundbreaking for the expansion project at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Strong Memorial Hospital. This transformative endeavor also features the invaluable expertise of Hammes Company, LLC, serving as the University of Rochester Medical Center’s representative and Ballinger as the distinguished project architect.
Upon its completion, the Strong Expansion Project will significantly increase the size of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, exceeding triple its current capacity, while introducing a new nine-story patient tower, adding 650,000 square feet of modern space. The anticipated completion date for this project is 2027, and it aims to effectively tackle the long-standing issues of chronic bed shortages and overcrowding in the Emergency Department that the community has grappled with for many years.

The expansion project will be implemented in phases, adding over 200 examination and treatment areas and patient observation stations to both the Emergency Department and the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). This combined expansion will result in a remarkable increase in space, expanding from the current 32,000 square feet to 120,000 square feet.

Notably, this project as a historic milestone for the University of Rochester, representing its most substantial capital endeavor to date. A pivotal boost came from the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program grant, contributing $50 million in state funding towards this monumental effort.
As a result of this extensive expansion, the Strong Expansion Project will establish the largest orthopedics campus in the Northeast, significantly enhancing healthcare access and services for Rochester and communities throughout the western New York region.
