Kaiser Permanente Bellflower: 100 Years of Healthcare
2025 marks a significant milestone for Turner Construction Company as it celebrates a century of healthcare construction. For the past 100 years, Turner has been at the forefront of delivering cutting-edge medical facilities that enhance the healthcare landscape, catering to the evolving needs of patients, healthcare professionals, and the communities they serve. This centennial milestone is not just about the projects completed but the lives touched and the difference made by the people behind them. As Turner reflects on its legacy, it takes immense pride in highlighting healthcare projects that exemplify its commitment to service, innovation, and impact.
One such project is the recently completed 32,000-square-foot Radiation Oncology Treatment Center for Kaiser Permanente in Bellflower, California. This facility represents Turner’s second collaboration on the Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Campus, reinforcing its long-standing partnership with one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers. The project not only enhances the region’s medical capabilities but also ensures that patients receive world-class cancer treatment in an environment designed for healing and comfort.
Expanding Access to Advanced Cancer Treatment
The Radiation Oncology Treatment Center is a vital addition to Kaiser Permanente’s healthcare network, bringing essential medical services closer to residents in the Downey and South Bay service areas. Prior to this facility’s completion, many patients had to travel long distances to access specialized oncology treatment. The introduction of this state-of-the-art center significantly reduces the burden on patients and their families by offering them local access to high-quality cancer care.
This facility houses advanced linear accelerators, which deliver precise radiation therapy for cancer treatment. Adjacent to the radiation oncology building is an Imaging Center, which features MRI machines and associated support spaces, further expanding the diagnostic capabilities of the medical campus. Additionally, the facility includes a CT scan room, private offices, and multiple exam rooms, all designed with the patient experience in mind. The layout prioritizes comfort, efficiency, and accessibility, ensuring that individuals receiving treatment are met with an environment that fosters hope and healing.
Architectural and Design Excellence
Turner and its design partners approached the Radiation Oncology Treatment Center with the goal of creating an uplifting and serene healing environment. Every aspect of the building’s design is centered around providing a calming atmosphere for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

One of the defining features of the building is its radiused curtain wall, which incorporates a fritted glass pattern inspired by the local ‘Belle-fleur’ apple tree—a symbolic reference to the Bellflower community. This thoughtful design element not only pays homage to the region’s history but also serves as a metaphor for resilience, renewal, and healing. The incorporation of natural light, warm materials, and nature-inspired elements further enhances the sense of tranquility within the space.
Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship
A strong focus on sustainability was embedded into every phase of the project, aligning with LEED Gold certification standards. The facility was designed as an all-electric specialty medical office, eliminating the reliance on fossil fuels and significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Turner conducted a solar study analysis to optimize building orientation, minimize energy loads, and maximize the use of natural daylight, ensuring energy efficiency without compromising patient comfort.
To enhance energy conservation, the facility integrates large windows and glass sliding doors, reducing the dependency on artificial lighting. Additionally, occupancy sensors and energy-efficient LED lighting were installed to regulate usage based on real-time activity, preventing unnecessary energy consumption. These smart systems work together to create a sustainable and eco-friendly healthcare environment.
Water conservation was also a critical component of the project. The landscape design incorporates drought-resistant plants and an innovative subsurface irrigation system, reducing water consumption by approximately 104,000 gallons per month—the equivalent of the monthly water usage of 12 residential homes. Additionally, during construction, Turner closely monitored water and electrical meters, allowing the team to make proactive adjustments and implement resource-saving measures whenever possible.
Through these sustainability efforts, Turner has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and green building practices, ensuring that the Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Campus will serve the community in a way that is both efficient and environmentally conscious.
A Testament to Innovation and Excellence
The completion of the Radiation Oncology Treatment Center represents Turner’s dedication to delivering world-class healthcare facilities that integrate cutting-edge technology, patient-centric design, and sustainability. The project stands as a testament to innovation, excellence, and the collaborative spirit between Turner and Kaiser Permanente.
Turner’s ability to blend advanced medical technology with thoughtful architectural design ensures that this facility will serve as a beacon of hope for cancer patients and their families. By focusing on efficiency, sustainability, and patient well-being, the Bellflower Medical Campus has set a new benchmark for healthcare construction, reflecting Turner’s century-long commitment to transforming the healthcare landscape.
