Granite Wins Sixth Highway 101 Segment to Ease Santa Barbara Traffic

Granite (NYSE:GVA) has secured a $38 million contract from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for Segment 4E South of Highway 101. This project involves adding peak-hour High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes and reconstructing the existing highway in southern Santa Barbara. Funding comes from Caltrans and local sources and was part of Granite’s second-quarter CAP.

This is Granite’s sixth Highway 101 mainline segment under its Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC) agreement with Caltrans and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG). The collaborative team has been working together for over five years on this project.

Completed segments include those in Carpinteria and Summerland, with a segment south of Summerland expected to finish by year-end. Ongoing work in Montecito is set for completion by 2026. The new Segment 4E South will integrate with the Montecito segments, enhancing project efficiency.

The project emphasizes sustainability, recycling 13,000 tons of removed materials into aggregate base and using concrete and Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) from nearby Granite facilities.

“This project represents a major advance in easing traffic congestion along this key corridor,” said Larry Camilleri, Granite’s Vice President of Regional Operations. “We look forward to partnering with Caltrans and SBCAG to deliver this vital project for the community.”

Construction is slated to begin in September 2024 and wrap up by October 2026.
