CTP, the largest listed developer, owner, and manager of industrial and logistics properties in Europe by gross lettable area (GLA), has officially handed over a 100,000 sqm logistics centre to Tesco in Hungary. Situated on a 60-hectare greenfield site near Szigetszentmiklós, this cutting-edge facility is designed to enhance Tesco’s operational efficiency, improve logistics, and significantly reduce carbon emissions. The centre is set to fully support Tesco’s nationwide operations starting in March 2025.
The nearly 1-kilometre-long complex comprises two cold storage halls with adjustable temperatures, a dry goods hall, a truck wash with a water recycling system, vehicle and forklift service areas, a gas station, and electric vehicle charging points. By consolidating storage functions, Tesco aims to streamline supply chains and cut transportation emissions. Infrastructure improvements, including local road developments, have also been completed to ensure smooth traffic flow for both logistics operations and the surrounding community.
Focus on Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of this project. Powered by renewable energy, the facility features 8,620 solar panels with a total capacity of 3.75 MW, earning it an ‘A’ energy rating. The building is on track to achieve BREEAM certification by the end of 2024. Tesco anticipates reducing annual CO2 emissions from transportation by 830 tons through this centralised logistics operation. Additional eco-friendly measures include a water recycling system for truck washing and an irrigation well to maintain green areas without tapping into the local drinking water supply.
Leaders Speak
“This new logistics centre is a major milestone for Tesco in Hungary,” said Zsolt Pálinkás, CEO of Tesco Hungary. “The retail sector is evolving rapidly, with sustainability, innovation, and home delivery playing increasingly important roles. This state-of-the-art, environmentally conscious facility positions us to better meet these changing demands while advancing our goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035.
