Redefining Workspaces in California: The Future of Healthy and Sustainable Design
As California transitions back to in-person work schedules, the design and construction of our work environments become crucial for fostering healthy and equitable experiences for all. The recent projects by the California Department of General Services, namely the Resources Building Renovation (RBR) and the New Natural Resources Headquarters Building (NNRH), exemplify spaces designed with the well-being of their occupants in mind.
New Natural Resources Headquarters: A Beacon of Sustainability
The New Natural Resources Headquarters is a LEED Platinum Certified building that meets Net Zero Energy standards. Recognized as the Best Sustainable Real Estate Project by the Sacramento Business Journal in 2021, the NNRH highlights the commitment to innovative and sustainable design by Turner Construction Company, AC Martin, IA Interior Architects, and Glumac.
Enhancing Employee Well-being
Connection to Nature
The building’s design prioritizes access to natural light through thoughtfully placed windows and skylights, creating a healthier and more pleasant work environment. Sunlight in workspaces enhances mood, productivity, and overall well-being. Additionally, outdoor spaces such as rooftop gardens and terraces offer employees opportunities to connect with nature during breaks, fostering creativity and reducing stress.
Superior Air Quality
Commitment to indoor air quality is evident with ASHRAE 62.1-compliant supply ventilation and MERV 13 filtration in HVAC systems. Entryway systems prevent dirt and particulates from entering, ensuring a cleaner indoor environment. Carbon dioxide levels in densely occupied spaces are monitored to optimize air quality.
Responsible Product Choices
The building features 49 products with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), quantifying their environmental impact throughout their life cycle. These responsible choices contribute to a healthier planet.
Reduced Carbon Emissions
Energy-smart design principles, a high-efficiency central plant, and 100% renewable electricity from SMUD Solar Shares have enabled an 87% reduction in annual carbon emissions compared to a typical office building, significantly benefiting the environment.
Resources Building Renovation: Transforming Spaces
The Progressive Design-Build Resources Building Renovation (RBR) goes beyond a mere facelift—it’s a transformation aimed at achieving Zero Net Energy and a minimum of LEED Silver certification. This project underscores the commitment to creating spaces that support the health and well-being of their occupants while promoting sustainable practices.
