Balfour Beatty has secured a £363 million contract from National Grid for the Bramford to Twinstead Reinforcement project. Awarded under National Grid’s RIIO-2 framework, the project will enhance the electricity network in East Anglia, supporting the UK’s transition to cleaner energy.
The company will replace the high-voltage electricity network between Bramford Substation in Suffolk and Twinstead Tee in Essex with a new 400kV overhead line spanning 18 kilometers, and install 11 kilometers of underground cable through the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Stour Valley.
Balfour Beatty will collaborate with ecologists and conservationists to minimize environmental impact, committing to a 10% biodiversity net gain.
Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty’s Group Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of the project in bolstering the UK’s energy security and transition. He highlighted the company’s long-standing relationship with National Grid and its expertise in delivering complex power transmission projects.
Construction is set to begin in early 2025 and finish by 2028, employing over 200 workers at peak, including apprentices and graduates as part of Balfour Beatty’s commitment to The 5% Club.
