L&T Secures Multiple Mega Orders to Strengthen India’s Metals and Minerals Infrastructure
Larsen & Toubro has secured a series of significant contracts for its Metals & Minerals (M&M) business vertical, reinforcing the company’s position as one of India’s leading engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors in the metals and mining sector. The newly awarded projects span the mining, ferrous steel, and non-ferrous metals industries, reflecting growing investments in industrial infrastructure as India expands its production capacity to meet future economic and manufacturing demands.
The latest order wins demonstrate the confidence that both public and private sector organizations continue to place in L&T’s engineering expertise, project execution capabilities, and ability to deliver large-scale industrial facilities. Together, these projects further strengthen the company’s extensive portfolio across the entire metals and minerals value chain.
One of the most significant contracts has been awarded by India’s largest public sector iron ore producer. The project forms part of the company’s long-term expansion strategy aimed at increasing its iron ore production capacity to 100 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030. As demand for raw materials continues to rise across infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing industries, expanding domestic mining capacity has become a strategic priority for the country.
Under this expansion programme, L&T has been awarded Package BE-01C for the development of an 18 MTPA Iron Ore Handling Plant located in the state of Chhattisgarh. The project represents a major component of the mining company’s infrastructure modernization programme and is expected to improve operational efficiency while supporting higher production volumes.
The scope of work assigned to L&T covers the complete engineering, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of several critical facilities required for the handling and transportation of iron ore. These include the design and construction of a downhill conveyor system, a modern screening plant, stockpile facilities, yard equipment, a Rapid Wagon Loading System (RWLS), and various associated auxiliary systems.
The conveyor and material handling infrastructure will enable the efficient movement of iron ore from mining operations to transportation facilities, reducing manual handling while improving productivity and operational reliability. The Rapid Wagon Loading System will further streamline logistics by enabling faster loading of railway wagons, thereby supporting higher transportation efficiency and reducing turnaround times.
In addition to the mining project, L&T has secured another important contract from a leading public sector Navratna enterprise undertaking a major expansion of its integrated steel manufacturing facilities in West Bengal. The steel producer is implementing an ambitious capacity enhancement programme that will increase annual steel production from 2.5 million tonnes per annum to 7.1 million tonnes per annum.
The expansion project is designed to strengthen India’s steel manufacturing capabilities while meeting rising domestic and international demand for high-quality steel products. As infrastructure development, urbanization, renewable energy projects, automotive manufacturing, and industrial construction continue to grow, increased steel production capacity remains critical to supporting long-term economic development.
As part of this expansion initiative, L&T has secured multiple Design & Build and Balance of Plant (BoP) packages. These contracts involve engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and integration of supporting infrastructure essential for efficient plant operations.
Balance of Plant systems typically include a wide range of supporting facilities such as utilities, material handling systems, piping networks, electrical systems, instrumentation, automation, water treatment facilities, and other critical infrastructure required for the seamless functioning of a modern steel plant. L&T’s experience in delivering integrated industrial projects positions the company well to execute these technically demanding assignments.
Beyond its public sector projects, L&T has also strengthened its longstanding relationship with one of India’s major private sector metals producers through the award of an EPC contract for a new Zinc Processing Plant.
The project highlights the company’s strong capabilities in the non-ferrous metals sector, where specialized engineering expertise and advanced metallurgical technologies are essential for successful project delivery. Under the contract, L&T will be responsible for complete design and engineering, procurement of equipment and materials, installation, commissioning, and associated site services.
The zinc processing facility will support increased production capacity while incorporating modern process technologies designed to improve operational efficiency, product quality, and environmental performance. By delivering an integrated EPC solution, L&T will manage every stage of the project lifecycle, ensuring timely execution and adherence to stringent quality and safety standards.
These latest contract awards reinforce L&T’s extensive experience in executing complex projects across diverse segments of the metals and minerals industry, including mining infrastructure, iron ore beneficiation, steel production, mineral processing, and non-ferrous metallurgy. Over the years, the company has developed comprehensive engineering capabilities that enable it to undertake large-scale industrial projects from concept and detailed design through commissioning and operational readiness.
Commenting on the new order wins, S. N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of L&T, said the contracts reaffirm the company’s long-standing leadership in the minerals and metals EPC sector. He noted that the awards demonstrate the deep trust customers continue to place in L&T’s ability to successfully execute projects of exceptional scale, technical complexity, and strategic importance.
He further emphasized that as India accelerates investments to expand its metals and minerals production capacity in support of long-term economic growth, L&T remains committed to partnering with leading enterprises to develop world-class industrial infrastructure. According to Subrahmanyan, strengthening domestic mining and manufacturing capabilities will play a vital role in supporting the nation’s industrial development, supply chain resilience, and global competitiveness.
T. Kumaresan, Senior Vice President and Head – Utilities & Metals at L&T, also highlighted the significance of the projects. He stated that securing contracts across the mining, ferrous, and non-ferrous sectors reflects customers’ continued confidence in the company’s engineering excellence and proven project execution capabilities.
He added that these projects further strengthen L&T’s position as a trusted infrastructure partner for India’s rapidly growing metals and minerals industry. The company remains focused on delivering every project with the highest standards of quality, operational safety, environmental responsibility, and sustainability while meeting demanding project schedules and customer expectations.
The latest contracts also reflect broader trends shaping India’s industrial landscape. With continued government investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, mining modernization, and resource security, demand for advanced industrial facilities is expected to remain strong in the coming years. Expansion of domestic mineral production and metal processing capacity will support key sectors including construction, transportation, renewable energy, defence, automotive manufacturing, and heavy engineering.
L&T’s integrated EPC capabilities, combined with decades of engineering expertise, position the company to play a central role in supporting this transformation. Its ability to manage complex projects across multiple industrial sectors has enabled the company to establish long-term relationships with many of India’s largest public and private enterprises.
