Awarded: Bird Paradise Singapore Earns 3rd OCAJI Project Recognition
The Overseas Construction Association of Japan, Inc. (OCAJI) recently held the 3rd OCAJI Project Award Ceremony, recognizing outstanding overseas construction projects. Among the distinguished recipients, Bird Paradise in Singapore, constructed by the Obayashi Group, was honored with the prestigious Project Award. This recognition marks the third consecutive year that the Obayashi Group has received this accolade, underscoring its excellence in international construction.
OCAJI and Its Role in Global Construction
Established in 1955, OCAJI has played a crucial role in promoting the expansion of Japan’s construction industry beyond its borders. The organization facilitates international business development, fosters collaboration with other nations, and contributes to global infrastructure advancement. The OCAJI Project Award was introduced in 2022 to highlight remarkable overseas construction projects, aiming to reinforce Japan’s presence in the international construction sector and support sustainable development.
For this year’s awards, a rigorous selection process was conducted to evaluate overseas construction and development projects completed between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023. A total of 18 entries were submitted, out of which seven projects were chosen for recognition. The evaluation was based on eight core manufacturing criteria:
- Quality assurance
- Construction schedule management
- Health, safety, and security measures
- Environmental conservation and biodiversity protection
- Work environment initiatives
- Climate change mitigation strategies
- International contributions
- Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Additionally, efforts to cater to the diverse needs of clients were factored into the selection process.
Bird Paradise: A Landmark Conservation Project
Located in the northern part of Singapore within the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, Bird Paradise spans approximately 230,000 square meters, making it one of the largest bird parks in the world. The park is home to over 3,500 birds representing more than 400 species, many of which are critically endangered. Bird Paradise is not just a tourist attraction but also a center for avian conservation, providing visitors with the unique opportunity to observe these rare species up close while supporting global conservation efforts.
A significant aspect of Bird Paradise’s design is its state-of-the-art aviary, constructed using high-strength stainless steel cables and mesh, covering an expansive 100,000 square meters. This extensive structure ensures the safety and well-being of the birds while offering an immersive experience for visitors. The project successfully balances ecological conservation with modern infrastructure, making it a model of sustainable development.
Innovative Construction Techniques and Environmental Considerations
The construction of Bird Paradise involved cutting-edge technologies to enhance precision and efficiency. One of the most notable advancements was the use of drones and 3D scanners to collect point cloud data, which was then processed through Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology. This digital twin approach enabled meticulous planning and execution, ensuring optimal construction management and high-quality results.
By leveraging 3D BIM models, engineers were able to accurately map the terrain and streamline the construction process. This method not only enhanced coordination among stakeholders but also facilitated real-time problem-solving, reducing delays and improving overall work efficiency.
The project also posed significant challenges due to the site’s complex topography. Bird Paradise is built on a landscape with a height variation of approximately 35 meters, requiring innovative design solutions to integrate the structures harmoniously with the natural surroundings. Special care was taken to preserve the existing trees and natural formations while constructing intricate features such as a cascading waterfall with a 20-meter drop and recreated rice terraces that mimic natural ecosystems.
