Turner Begins SF Airport Terminal 3 West Modernization

Turner, alongside design-build partners Gensler and TEF, has broken ground on the Terminal 3 West Modernization project at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Leading this $2.6 billion transformation, Turner aims to create a modern, world-class terminal that enhances passenger comfort, efficiency, and sustainability.

The project includes a 200,000-square-foot terminal expansion, renovation of 650,000 square feet, and the construction of a new six-story building housing airline lounges and office space.

To minimize disruptions, Turner is constructing temporary passenger corridors, fabricated offsite and transported across the airfield in modules over 11 nights. This thoughtful planning aims to simplify passenger flow and reduce the need for multiple relocations during construction.

The modernization will bring state-of-the-art amenities, expanded concessions, enhanced security, a redesigned check-in area, improved baggage systems, and advanced technology to streamline operations. It will set new standards in sustainability, targeting LEED Platinum certification by incorporating energy-efficient systems, water-saving fixtures, and eco-friendly materials.

“This project is a significant investment in the future of air travel and a commitment to sustainability,” said Tina Smith, Construction Executive at Turner. “We are building a terminal that meets the highest standards of efficiency and environmental responsibility.”

Turner’s longstanding partnership with SFO is further strengthened through this project. Vice President & General Manager Nino Adamo emphasized the team’s focus on innovation, quality, and sustainability, as they work to transform Terminal 3 West into a cutting-edge facility.

The expansion is expected to open in the fall of 2027, with additional phases completing in 2029.
