Great Day Improvements Reveals Key Trends Shaping the 2027 U.S. Home Renovation Market

American homeowners continue to show strong interest in improving their properties, but the way they approach renovation is changing. According to the newly released 2027 State of American Home Renovation report from Great Day Improvements, homeowners are becoming more deliberate about where and how they spend money on home improvement projects.

The report indicates that renovation decisions in 2027 will be driven less by urgency and resale value and more by comfort, appearance, long-term satisfaction, and careful financial planning. Despite economic uncertainty and higher project costs, 75% of homeowners surveyed say they plan to undertake some form of renovation during the next 12 months.

The findings highlight a changing environment for the U.S. home improvement industry following several years of significant disruption. The sector has experienced pandemic-driven demand, supply chain challenges, inflation, labor shortages, and rapidly evolving consumer expectations.

Homeowners Remain Committed to Renovation

Although economic pressures continue to influence household budgets, the desire to improve homes remains strong. Three out of four homeowners expect to renovate within the coming year, demonstrating that home improvement remains an important priority.

However, homeowners are increasingly evaluating projects before committing to them. Rather than spending simply to increase property value, many are looking for improvements that provide meaningful benefits to their everyday lives.

Drew Weinfurtner, president and CEO of Great Day Improvements, said the industry is moving into a period where homeowners are making decisions with greater consideration. Consumers still want to improve their homes, but they are taking more time to evaluate costs, priorities, and the potential benefits of each project.

Transparency Becomes Critical

One of the report’s most important findings is the growing importance of transparency when homeowners select renovation professionals.

For 39% of homeowners, having a clear understanding of project costs is the most important consideration when choosing a renovation partner. This suggests that consumers are placing greater emphasis on straightforward pricing and clear communication.

With construction and renovation expenses remaining a significant concern, homeowners want to understand what they are paying for before beginning a project. Companies that can provide transparent estimates, explain project requirements, and communicate clearly may be better positioned to earn consumer trust.

The emphasis on transparency also reflects a broader shift toward more informed purchasing decisions. Homeowners are becoming increasingly selective and want to feel confident that their investment will deliver meaningful results.

Millennials Continue to Drive Renovation Activity

Millennial homeowners remain one of the most active groups in the renovation market. Approximately 77% of millennial homeowners reported renovating their homes this year.

However, high costs are limiting how much more this generation can invest. About 51% of millennials identified high costs as a barrier, while another 26% cited competing financial priorities as a reason for limiting additional renovation activity.

The findings suggest that millennials remain highly interested in improving their homes but are balancing renovation ambitions against broader financial obligations.

By comparison, baby boomers reported lower levels of renovation interest. A major reason is that many do not currently see a pressing need for additional home improvements. This difference between generations highlights how age, financial priorities, and housing needs can influence renovation decisions.

Essential Exterior Projects Are Being Delayed

While homeowners continue to invest in their properties, the report also points to a potential concern: deferred maintenance.

Essential exterior projects appear to be receiving less attention than lifestyle-focused improvements. Only 14% of homeowners completed a roofing project, while 12% upgraded their windows and just 8% addressed their gutters.

These figures suggest that some homeowners may be postponing necessary maintenance while prioritizing projects that immediately improve comfort or appearance.

Delayed exterior maintenance could become an important issue for homeowners and renovation professionals in the years ahead. Roofing, windows, gutters, and other exterior components play an important role in protecting a property from weather-related damage and maintaining its long-term condition.

Comfort and Appearance Take Priority

The motivations behind renovation projects are also changing. Instead of focusing primarily on resale value, homeowners increasingly want their properties to provide a better living experience.

According to the report, 47% of homeowners identified improved comfort as a leading motivation for remodeling, while 44% cited aesthetics.

The findings indicate that homeowners are placing greater importance on how their homes look and feel every day. Renovations that create more comfortable, attractive, and functional living environments are becoming increasingly valuable.

This shift could influence the types of projects homeowners choose in 2027, with consumers likely to focus on improvements that deliver visible and practical benefits.

A More Deliberate Renovation Market

The 2027 State of American Home Renovation report represents the second edition of Great Day Improvements’ research initiative, which began in 2026. The report aims to provide an ongoing view of homeowner priorities as economic conditions, housing market dynamics, and lifestyles continue to evolve.

Great Day Improvements expects homeowners to remain committed to renovation but become increasingly intentional about their spending.

For renovation professionals, understanding these changing priorities will be essential. Clear pricing, transparent communication, and a strong focus on comfort and quality can help companies respond to consumers who are carefully evaluating every investment.

Overall, the report paints a picture of a U.S. home renovation market that remains active but more measured. Homeowners are not abandoning improvement projects; instead, they are becoming more selective about which projects deserve their time and money.

As 2027 approaches, the ability to demonstrate value, build trust, and address homeowners’ most important needs could become increasingly important across the renovation industry.
