Budimex Begins Foundation Construction for Passenger Terminal at Poland’s New National Airport

The contract, valued at nearly 34 million euros, marks the start of construction on one of Central Europe’s most ambitious infrastructure projects

Budimex, the Polish subsidiary of Ferrovial, has secured a major contract from Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) to carry out the foundation works for the passenger terminal at Poland’s new national airport. Located between Warsaw and Łódź, the project represents the first major stage in the construction of what is expected to become the country’s largest and most ambitious infrastructure development.

The contract is valued at 145.9 million Polish zlotys (approximately 34 million euros) and covers the execution of deep foundation works that will support the airport’s future passenger terminal. Construction activities are scheduled to begin in September 2026, marking the official start of a project that is expected to reshape Poland’s transportation network and strengthen its position as a key aviation hub in Central Europe.

The Centralny Port Komunikacyjny project is one of the most significant investments ever undertaken in Poland. Designed as a modern, integrated transport hub, the airport will combine air, rail, and road connections, creating a central gateway that will improve domestic and international connectivity while supporting long-term economic development.

Commenting on the contract award, Artur Popko, President and Chief Executive Officer of Budimex, emphasized the strategic importance of the project for both Poland and the wider region.

“This is a project of strategic importance for Poland and for Central Europe as a whole. We will carry it out with a full sense of responsibility, paying the utmost attention to safety and quality, and with a commitment to ensuring that it makes a lasting contribution to modernizing the country’s infrastructure,” said Popko.

The foundation package includes the installation of more than 8,000 piles and foundation columns, which will provide the structural support required for the airport’s passenger terminal. Individual foundation elements will range in length from 9 to 30 meters, depending on ground conditions and engineering requirements.

To complete the project, Budimex will employ a variety of advanced deep foundation technologies suited to different soil conditions across the construction site. Once finished, the combined length of all ground reinforcement elements will exceed 140 kilometers, highlighting the scale and complexity of the engineering work involved.

These deep foundation structures are critical to ensuring the long-term stability and durability of the passenger terminal. By reinforcing the ground before above-ground construction begins, the project will create a secure base capable of supporting one of Europe’s most advanced airport facilities.

According to the current schedule, the foundation works are expected to be completed by the end of 2027, allowing subsequent phases of terminal construction to move forward.

The new airport is being designed to become the most modern aviation facility in Central Europe, offering world-class infrastructure capable of accommodating growing passenger demand and future aviation needs. The airport will feature two independent runways, enabling efficient aircraft operations and increasing overall capacity.

Once operational, the airport is expected to handle more than 300,000 flight operations annually, making it one of the region’s busiest transportation hubs. Its strategic location between Warsaw and Łódź is intended to improve accessibility for travelers while supporting Poland’s ambition to become a major European aviation and logistics center.

Beyond aviation, the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny project is expected to generate significant economic and social benefits. The airport and its surrounding development are projected to create more than 35,000 direct jobs, providing employment opportunities across construction, aviation, logistics, retail, hospitality, and supporting industries.

The overall CPK investment program is estimated at approximately 131.7 billion Polish zlotys through 2032, covering not only the airport itself but also extensive rail and transport infrastructure designed to connect major cities across Poland. The integrated transport network is expected to reduce travel times, improve regional mobility, and enhance the country’s competitiveness within Europe.

For Budimex, the contract further strengthens its position as one of Poland’s leading infrastructure contractors. The company has extensive experience delivering large-scale civil engineering, transportation, and public infrastructure projects, making it well positioned to execute one of the country’s most technically demanding developments.

The award also reinforces Ferrovial’s presence in the Polish market. Through Budimex, the international infrastructure group continues to expand its portfolio of complex transportation projects while contributing to the modernization of Poland’s infrastructure.

As construction progresses over the coming years, the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny project is expected to play a transformative role in Poland’s economic development, improving national and international connectivity while supporting sustainable long-term growth. The foundation works awarded to Budimex represent a critical first step toward delivering a next-generation airport that aims to serve millions of passengers and become a major transportation gateway for Central Europe.
