Budimex to Rebuild New Jewish Theatre HQ in Warsaw
Budimex has officially entered into a major agreement to redesign and reconstruct a building in Warsaw, transforming it into the new headquarters of the Jewish Theatre Warsaw along with facilities for the city’s Labour Office. Located at 22 Kasprzaka Street, the project represents a significant cultural and civic investment aimed at strengthening both artistic expression and public services in the Polish capital. The development will follow a “design and build” model and is scheduled for completion within 24 months from the contract’s signing.
The formal signing ceremony took place on April 2 at the project site itself, symbolically marking the beginning of a transformation that will reshape the building into a modern cultural hub. The agreement was signed by key stakeholders, including Ewelina Degowska, Director of the Warsaw City Development Board; Gołda Tencer, Director of the Jewish Theatre; and Cezary Łysenko, Member of the Management Board at Budimex. The event was attended by prominent city officials such as Aldona Machnowska-Góra, Deputy Mayor of Warsaw, and Agnieszka Wyrwał, Chairwoman of the Culture Committee of the Warsaw City Council, underscoring the project’s importance to the city’s cultural and social framework.
The scope of the investment is extensive and involves a comprehensive reconstruction of the existing structure alongside the addition of entirely new building sections. These developments are specifically designed to meet the operational and artistic needs of the Jewish Theatre, which also functions as a center for Yiddish culture. The project includes the demolition of outdated elements of the current building, notably the “Leipzig” pavilion, to make way for new construction utilizing modern monolithic building technology. In addition to structural works, the contract covers full-scale installation works, including advanced stage technology that will enable the theatre to host high-quality performances and cultural events.
Once completed, the facility will feature a main theatre hall with approximately 350 seats, offering a spacious and technologically advanced environment for performances. In addition, a smaller chamber stage with seating for around 100 people will provide a more intimate setting for experimental productions, workshops, and community events. The theatre complex will also include educational and conference spaces, supporting its broader mission as a cultural and learning center. Altogether, the theatre section will span over 3,500 square meters of usable space.
Complementing the cultural component, the development will also incorporate facilities for the Labour Office, which will occupy approximately 2,500 square meters on the upper floors of the building. This integration of cultural and administrative functions reflects a broader vision of creating multifunctional public spaces that serve diverse community needs. The project will also include the preparation of comprehensive design documentation and the development of surrounding infrastructure, such as sidewalks and landscaped public areas, enhancing accessibility and the overall urban environment.
The total value of the contract is PLN 115.2 million, highlighting the scale and significance of the investment. Beyond construction, the project emphasizes urban regeneration and community engagement, aiming to create a vibrant destination that blends cultural heritage with modern functionality. The development is expected to play a key role in revitalizing the surrounding area while contributing to Warsaw’s cultural landscape.
Cezary Łysenko of Budimex emphasized that the project goes beyond a standard construction assignment. He described it as an opportunity to participate in creating a living cultural space that reflects history, identity, and community life. According to him, such projects require not only technical expertise but also a deep understanding of cultural significance and sensitivity to the role these institutions play in shaping the city’s identity.
Ewelina Degowska also highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that it marks a significant step in establishing a dedicated space for a theatre that holds great cultural and historical value. She pointed out that combining cultural and social functions within a single development addresses the evolving needs of modern urban populations while encouraging greater community participation and engagement.
