Budimex Achieves Over 90% Completion of the Drezdenko Bypass Construction
The construction of the Drezdenko bypass in the Lubuskie Voivodeship, led by Budimex SA, has reached a significant milestone — over 90% of the total work has now been completed. As one of the most important infrastructure projects in the region, the investment is progressing steadily and in line with the established schedule. Once finished, the new bypass will drastically improve traffic flow, reduce congestion in the town center, and enhance the overall quality of life for local residents.
The Drezdenko bypass, stretching 3.56 kilometers, is designed to reroute heavy transit traffic away from the city center. This move is expected to significantly reduce noise, air pollution, and the risks associated with large vehicle movement through densely populated and historically sensitive areas of the town. The strategic positioning of the road will also ensure improved connectivity for surrounding towns and rural areas, offering both economic and environmental benefits.
The project involves the construction of a class G road standard, suitable for general traffic, along with several major engineering structures. A key element is a 346-meter-long bridge spanning the Noteć and Old Noteć rivers, which has already seen substantial progress. Additionally, the development includes the construction of a railway viaduct, four farm crossings to maintain agricultural connectivity, and five designated wildlife crossings to ensure the safe passage of animals across the new infrastructure.
A major feature of the bypass is its integration with the existing road network. The project incorporates a large roundabout near Klesno, which connects voivodeship road No. 160 with road No. 156. This junction will serve as a vital link for local and regional traffic, enhancing accessibility and reducing travel times.
Sławomir Krekora, Contract Director at Budimex SA, emphasized the significance of the investment:
“The construction of the Drezdenko bypass is one of the key infrastructure initiatives in the northern part of the Lubuskie Voivodeship. Despite numerous challenges, including complex terrain and hydrological conditions, we have maintained a strong pace of progress. The project is moving forward in accordance with the plan, and we are confident that this investment will bring long-term benefits to the region and its residents.”
The scale of work already completed is impressive. To date, over 30,000 cubic meters of soil have been replaced, 300,000 cubic meters of road embankments constructed, and 11,000 tons of aggregate foundation laid. For the paving, approximately 16,000 tons of mineral-asphalt mixtures have been used. The bridge construction alone has required over 4,900 cubic meters of concrete and around 1,300 tons of steel, which includes 700 tons of reinforcement and 630 tons of structural steel.
Modern construction techniques and advanced geotechnical solutions have played a crucial role in ensuring the stability of the bypass, particularly in floodplain areas. These technologies help mitigate the risks associated with soft ground and high water levels, ensuring long-term durability and safety.
Environmental considerations have also been a core component of the project. Given the proximity to Natura 2000 protected areas, the bypass has been carefully designed to minimize ecological disruption. Wildlife corridors have been incorporated beneath the road embankments to allow animals to cross safely. In addition, compensatory planting and protective green belts are part of the development to restore and enhance the local environment.
The bypass is not only a road project but a strategic investment in the region’s future. By redirecting truck and transit traffic out of the historic town center, the bypass will contribute to preserving Drezdenko’s architectural heritage while improving urban safety and livability. Less traffic in the city also means fewer accidents, reduced structural vibrations, and better air quality for residents.
The project is being implemented under the “optimize and build” model by Budimex SA, commissioned by the Voivodeship Roads Authority in Zielona Góra. It receives financial backing from the Government Road Development Fund under a program specifically targeting bypass construction. The total value of the contract is PLN 108 million gross. At the peak of construction activity, more than 700 workers were engaged on-site, demonstrating the scale and importance of the operation.
With completion just around the corner, the Drezdenko bypass is set to become a model example of modern, sustainable infrastructure that blends engineering excellence with environmental stewardship and regional development goals.
