YIT Secures €18 Million Contract to Build Esplanadi Water Supply Tunnel

The Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) has awarded YIT Infra Oy an €18 million contract to construct the new Esplanadi water supply tunnel. The agreement is expected to be finalized by mid-August, with construction scheduled to begin in the fall.

The tunnel will be located in Helsinki’s Kaartinkaupunki and Kamppi districts, linking Esplanadi Park to the existing Munkkisaari–Mäntymäki water supply tunnel. Designed to run through bedrock, the tunnel will include both wet and dry sections. The wet section will operate as an open sewer, while the dry section will contain newly installed sewer and maintenance water pipelines and provide access for vehicles and pedestrians.

“This is a landmark project that will significantly improve the reliability and resilience of Helsinki’s water infrastructure,” said Aleksi Laine, Executive Vice President of YIT’s Infrastructure segment. “It’s a great opportunity to apply our deep expertise in rock excavation and water supply construction.”

The project highlights HSY’s commitment to modernizing essential infrastructure while enhancing the functionality of urban environments.
