Wheels are in stir at new Perry Barr machine garage
National Express West Midlands is continuing its trip to net zero by 2030 with the launch of full operations at its brand-new, environmentally-sustainable machine and conservation garage in Perry Barr in Birmingham.
After making their last departure from the current 90 time old depot on the morning of Saturday 10 December, a line of 170 motorcars will return from routes across the megacity to the ultramodern, state- of- the- art installation on the junction of Wellhead Lane and Aston Lane
The6.5 acre point will give a new base for over 450 motorists, masterminds and aft office workers and includes a cafe, rest areas, a separate quiet space, shower installations and devoted training apartments; as well as a whole host of energy effective measures and the capacity to house a full line of electric motorcars and their dishes.
David Bradford, Managing Director of National Express West Midlands explains ‘ From the very launch of the design, we wanted to produce a point that offered our people a high quality working terrain but to also insure a low environmental impact in both the figure and unborn operations. ’
Construction establishment BAM worked with National Express tore-plan andre-engineer the schem to enable it to achieve a largely sustainable status.
The new Perry Barr garage will include
Parking spaces for over 170 motorcars
12 conservation kudos, 3 energy kudos, 3 machine wetlands and 1 lattice marshland
solar panels
Hotting via a mongrel system including Air Source Heat Pumps( ASHP), electric overhead radiant panels & Variable Refrigerant Flow, supplemented with solar panels- meaning there’s no need for gas onsite.
A 432m2 green roof with a 22 species planting blend on anultra-light sedum. By coming summer, there will be over to 90 content helping ameliorate air quality and territories for wildlife
A green wall on aural panelling to help ameliorate air quality whilst reducing noise pollution. A wild flower theater has also been planted behind the aural panelling to ameliorate territories for wildlife.
A tone- contained water recycling system for machine wetlands
Rainwater harvesting for toilets and urinals
2 snooker tables & 1 fish tank

Through evolving our garage and operations we ’ll use lower energy, be indeed safer, have more effective ways of working, and are more equipped to train and look after our people while furnishing great value transport for the people of the West Midlands. Working in public transport is a fantastic career and we’re laboriously retaining both motorists and masterminds to join us at our new Perry Barr garage. We ’ve lately increased pay rates and bettered inflexibility with part time work, four- day weeks, and shorter week options. The new garage is part of the wider rejuvenescence of the Perry Barr area by Birmingham City Council. Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said ‘ As well as delivering new homes and advancements to community installations like the Alexander Stadium, the programme of rejuvenescence in Perry Barr is also delivering a range of sustainable transport options that will make the area one of the most well connected in the region. These include the revamped Perry Barr road station, Sprint machine rapid-fire conveyance routes, better options for cycling and walking – and also this brilliant new installation for National Express West Midlands. This investment in a new depot is helping lay the foundations for a cleaner machine network of the future. It’s great that Perry Barr, which is witnessing such a significant metamorphosis, is at the heart of this green progress. ’
