Walsh-Turner JV Delivers $1.5B Ohio State Hospital

The Walsh–Turner Joint Venture has successfully completed construction of a landmark healthcare facility for The Ohio State University—the new $1.5 billion University Hospital at the Wexner Medical Center. Marking a historic milestone, this development stands as the largest single-facility construction project ever undertaken by the university. Spanning an impressive 1.9 million square feet, the new hospital significantly enhances Ohio State’s capabilities in academic medicine, clinical care, and advanced research, reinforcing its position as a leader in healthcare innovation.

Rising 26 stories, the hospital tower has been designed to accommodate 820 patient beds and a full spectrum of cutting-edge diagnostic, treatment, and inpatient services. The facility integrates advanced medical technologies with carefully planned clinical spaces, including emergency departments, imaging suites, operating rooms, critical care units, and specialized medical and surgical floors. This comprehensive approach ensures the hospital is equipped to manage both routine and highly complex medical cases with efficiency and precision.

Among its standout clinical features are 24 state-of-the-art operating rooms, including two hybrid neurovascular suites that combine advanced imaging technologies with surgical capabilities. These specialized environments enable physicians to perform intricate, high-risk procedures with greater accuracy and improved patient outcomes. The hospital also includes more than 200 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, underscoring its readiness to provide critical care at scale.

Neonatal care is another area of strength within the facility. The hospital features 44 private neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) rooms along with 51 bassinets, creating a supportive and technologically advanced environment for newborns requiring specialized medical attention. In addition, nearly 100 isolation-infection rooms have been incorporated into the design. A unique capability allows an entire 60-bed floor to be rapidly converted into a dedicated isolation unit, ensuring preparedness for future public health emergencies.

The impact of the project extends beyond the University Hospital itself. As part of the broader development, significant upgrades and expansions were made to the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. These improvements increased the cancer hospital’s capacity by 148 beds, elevating it to become the second-largest freestanding cancer hospital in the United States. This expansion strengthens Ohio State’s ability to deliver comprehensive oncology care and conduct pioneering cancer research.

Supporting infrastructure has also been enhanced through the construction of a new 60,000-square-foot Central Sterile Facility, which plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of surgical and clinical operations across the medical campus. Additionally, a 1,900-space parking garage has been introduced to improve accessibility for patients, visitors, and staff, addressing one of the key logistical challenges of large healthcare institutions.

Technology integration is a defining feature of the new hospital. Every inpatient room is equipped with a 75-inch digital screen, offering patients access to entertainment, telehealth services, and real-time information about their care team. These systems not only enhance the patient experience but also streamline communication between healthcare providers and patients. Advanced monitoring systems installed in each room further enable medical staff to observe and respond to patient needs efficiently.

The facility also reflects Ohio State’s strong commitment to education and training. Its design incorporates dedicated spaces for students and multidisciplinary care teams, allowing for hands-on learning in a real clinical environment. Expanded team workrooms facilitate instruction, collaboration, and case reviews, ensuring that future healthcare professionals are trained in a setting that emphasizes teamwork, innovation, and high-performance care delivery.

In addition to its clinical and educational capabilities, the hospital prioritizes comfort and well-being through thoughtful architectural design by HDR. Patient rooms, hallways, and shared spaces are filled with natural light, thanks to large 9-foot-by-9-foot windows. A 20,000-square-foot outdoor terrace with mature landscaping provides a calming environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Other amenities include a sunlit conservatory, a sanctuary for reflection, and a range of dining and retail options such as a 400-seat café, coffee shops, a gift shop, and a pharmacy.

Vertical transportation within the hospital is supported by 50 elevators and a two-story escalator system. A unique “baby button” feature offers direct access from the lobby to the labor and delivery unit, enhancing convenience for expectant families.

Construction of the hospital began in 2020 on a compact four-acre site, presenting significant logistical and engineering challenges. At peak activity, the Walsh–Turner team coordinated approximately 1,200 workers daily. The project involved the installation of 15,000 tons of structural steel and nearly 1,900 miles of electrical wiring, highlighting the immense scale and complexity of the undertaking.

To successfully deliver the project, the joint venture adopted a highly integrated and collaborative approach. This strategy emphasized transparent communication, efficient problem-solving, and disciplined execution across all teams and stakeholders. As a result, many sections of the hospital were completed and handed over an average of 40 days ahead of schedule, with the overall project achieving substantial completion earlier than planned.

Project leaders expressed pride in the achievement, noting that the facility represents a shared commitment to advancing healthcare access and innovation. The collaboration between Walsh Construction, Turner Construction Company, and Ohio State has set a new benchmark for large-scale healthcare construction projects.

Ultimately, the new University Hospital stands as a transformative addition to Ohio State’s medical campus. By combining advanced technology, patient-centered design, and a strong educational focus, the facility is poised to play a critical role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery, research, and medical training for years to come.
