Venture Global Begins Commercial Operations at Calcasieu Pass

Venture Global has officially notified its long-term customers that commercial operations at its Calcasieu Pass liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility will commence on April 15, 2025. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the company, as the facility reaches its commercial operation date (COD) in record time—less than 68 months after the final investment decision (FID) was made in August 2019. Despite facing major challenges, including two hurricanes, the global COVID-19 pandemic, and unforeseen manufacturing setbacks such as complications with the Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) integral to the facility’s power plant, Venture Global has successfully completed the project.

The company extends its deepest gratitude to the dedicated construction and completion teams whose tireless efforts ensured the facility’s safe and efficient delivery. Additionally, Venture Global acknowledges the crucial role of its vendors in supporting necessary repairs and maintenance, as well as the oversight and collaboration of government regulators, particularly the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). These collective efforts have enabled the company to uphold its commitment to delivering clean, cost-effective LNG to customers for the full 20-year duration of its contractual agreements.

Overcoming Challenges to Deliver One of the Fastest Greenfield LNG Projects

The Calcasieu Pass LNG facility stands out as one of the most rapidly completed greenfield LNG projects in the industry. From the initial investment decision in 2019 to its impending COD in April 2025, the project has overcome numerous obstacles while maintaining efficiency and safety standards. The successful completion of the facility in less than six years is particularly noteworthy given the magnitude of challenges encountered.

Among the major hurdles, two hurricanes struck the Gulf Coast region during the project’s development, testing the resilience of the construction and engineering teams. Despite these natural disasters, work continued with minimal delays, thanks to rigorous planning and rapid response measures implemented by Venture Global and its partners. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated the situation, disrupting supply chains, limiting workforce availability, and necessitating the implementation of strict health and safety protocols. However, Venture Global’s commitment to adaptability and innovation ensured steady progress even under these unprecedented conditions.

One of the most technically demanding challenges involved the Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), which play a crucial role in the power plant’s energy efficiency. Unexpected manufacturing issues required swift action to implement repairs and modifications. Through close collaboration with vendors and regulatory bodies, these issues were resolved, enabling the project to stay on track.

A Commitment to Long-Term, Low-Cost LNG Supply

With commercial operations set to begin, Venture Global is now in a position to fulfill its promise of delivering reliable, low-cost LNG to customers worldwide. The company has secured long-term contracts spanning two decades, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted energy provider. The Calcasieu Pass facility will contribute significantly to global energy markets, supplying cleaner and more affordable LNG to meet growing demand.

This project aligns with Venture Global’s broader strategy of leveraging North America’s abundant natural gas resources to produce and export LNG efficiently. By integrating advanced modular construction techniques and innovative liquefaction technology, the company has been able to optimize production timelines while maintaining cost efficiency.

The Future of Venture Global’s LNG Expansion

The successful launch of Calcasieu Pass is only one milestone in Venture Global’s ambitious growth strategy. The company is actively expanding its LNG portfolio, with several additional projects underway. Notably, Venture Global’s second major LNG facility, Plaquemines LNG, achieved its first LNG production in December 2024. This marks another key development in the company’s mission to increase LNG supply capacity and enhance energy security on a global scale.

Currently, Venture Global is constructing and developing more than 100 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of nameplate LNG production capacity. This expansion will further position the company as a leading player in the LNG sector, ensuring the availability of clean, affordable energy for markets worldwide.

Additionally, Venture Global is taking proactive steps to integrate sustainability initiatives into its operations. The company is actively developing carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) projects at each of its LNG facilities. By implementing these technologies, Venture Global aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to global decarbonization efforts while continuing to meet the world’s energy needs.
