Turner and Partners Celebrate Completion of Structural Work for Henry Ford Health’s New Patient Tower
Turner, together with project partners Barton Malow and Dixon, has celebrated a major construction milestone with the topping out of Henry Ford Health’s new patient tower in Detroit. The achievement marks a significant step forward in the transformation of the historic Henry Ford Hospital campus as part of the ambitious Destination: Grand development project in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood.
The topping out ceremony brought together hundreds of project team members, construction professionals, partners, and community supporters to recognize the completion of the tower’s vertical steel construction. During the event, a 32-foot-long, 1,400-pound steel beam was lifted and placed at the highest point of the 20-story structure, symbolizing the progress made on one of the region’s most significant healthcare developments.
The new patient tower serves as the centerpiece of Destination: Grand, a $2.2 billion investment designed to modernize and reimagine the more than century-old Henry Ford Hospital campus. The project represents a major advancement in healthcare infrastructure for Detroit and aims to create a next-generation medical destination equipped with innovative technology, advanced treatment spaces, and improved patient experiences.
“This milestone reflects the incredible collaboration, dedication, and craftsmanship of everyone involved in bringing this transformative healthcare project to life,” said Kirsten Deenik of Turner. “We are proud to partner with Henry Ford Health, Barton Malow, Dixon, and the entire project team to deliver a world-class facility that will serve Detroit and surrounding communities for generations to come.”
Since construction officially began in September 2024, project crews have made significant progress on the development. Teams have installed approximately 6,800 tons of structural steel and completed more than 600,000 cumulative work hours, highlighting the scale and complexity of the project.
The topping out milestone represents not only the completion of the building’s steel framework but also the continued commitment of project partners to delivering a modern healthcare facility that will support patients, medical professionals, and communities for decades.
“This steel beam symbolizes the strength of our commitment to the city we’ve called home for more than a century,” said Bob Riney, President and CEO of Henry Ford Health. “This milestone moment brings us one step closer to opening the hospital of the future, where people from Detroit and around the world will have access to the very best in medical breakthroughs, technology, treatment, and healing environments, regardless of where they live or their socio-economic status.”
Once completed, the new patient tower will provide 1.2 million square feet of additional healthcare space and introduce a wide range of advanced medical facilities. The expansion will include 432 private patient rooms designed with modern comfort and technology in mind. Each room will feature advanced interactive smart technology aimed at improving communication, patient care, and overall healthcare experiences.
The facility will also include specialized intensive care units and 28 advanced operating suites designed to support complex surgical procedures and medical innovations. These spaces will allow healthcare teams to deliver advanced treatments while supporting Henry Ford Health’s continued focus on clinical excellence and research.
A major feature of the development will be the new 75,000-square-foot emergency department, which will significantly expand emergency care capabilities. The department will include 100 private treatment spaces, fast-track care areas designed to improve efficiency, and dedicated behavioral health emergency services to support a broader range of patient needs.
The Destination: Grand project reflects Henry Ford Health’s long-term vision to create a healthcare campus that combines cutting-edge medicine with patient-centered design. Beyond improving clinical spaces, the development aims to enhance the overall experience for patients, families, employees, and visitors.
The project also represents a significant economic investment in Detroit, creating construction opportunities and supporting local businesses throughout the development process. Through collaboration between Henry Ford Health, Turner, Barton Malow, Dixon, and numerous industry partners, the project continues to move toward completion with a focus on quality, innovation, and community impact.
As construction progresses, the topping out of the new patient tower stands as an important symbol of progress and partnership. The completed facility will help position Henry Ford Health at the forefront of modern healthcare while continuing the organization’s more than 100-year legacy of serving Detroit and communities across the region.
