SMART MULTI® Lineup Expanded with New 5-Ton H2i® Outdoor Unit

Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US LLC (METUS), a leading provider of all-electric, all-climate ductless and ducted mini-split as well as Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) heat pump and air-conditioning solutions, has officially announced the launch of its new single-phase SMART MULTI® 5-ton Hyper-Heating INVERTER® (H2i) outdoor unit (MXZ-SM). This latest addition marks a significant expansion of the company’s residential and light-commercial product portfolio, strengthening its ability to serve colder climate regions with higher-capacity, energy-efficient HVAC solutions.

With this launch, METUS completes its SMART MULTI® lineup by introducing a 5-ton single-phase option equipped with advanced Hyper-Heating INVERTER® (H2i) technology. The expanded lineup allows engineers, contractors, and building owners to select appropriately sized systems across a wider range of residential and commercial applications. The goal is to improve design flexibility while maintaining high efficiency, even in extreme weather conditions.

The newly introduced 5-ton H2i outdoor unit is specifically engineered to deliver consistent heating performance in cold environments. According to the company, the system is capable of providing 100% heating capacity at 5°F and maintaining approximately 80% heating capacity even when outdoor temperatures drop to -13°F. In addition, the unit includes a heating thermal lock-out at -24°F, ensuring safe and controlled operation in extremely low-temperature conditions. The integration of flash injection technology further enhances compressor performance during freezing weather, allowing the system to sustain higher efficiency and stable output when demand is highest.

A key advantage of this new release is its ability to support multi-zone configurations. The 5-ton SMART MULTI® H2i outdoor unit can connect to multiple indoor units, enabling individualized temperature control across different rooms or zones within a building. This flexibility is particularly valuable in multi-family homes, large residences, and light commercial properties where different occupants may require different comfort settings.

The system also offers strong indoor unit compatibility, supporting a connected capacity range of 50% to 130%. It is designed to work seamlessly with both M- and P-Series indoor units, supporting up to eight indoor units per outdoor unit. Additionally, it is compatible with CITY MULTI® indoor units, expanding the total configuration capacity up to 12 units in certain system designs. This wide compatibility gives designers and installers greater freedom to customize installations based on building size, layout, and usage patterns.

Another important feature of the new SMART MULTI® unit is its use of low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant, aligning with modern environmental regulations and sustainability goals. The system is designed with built-in safety enhancements, including shut-off valves that meet A2L refrigerant safety standards and UL requirements. These features ensure compliance with evolving industry codes while maintaining operational safety and environmental responsibility.

For improved usability and serviceability, the unit incorporates enhanced dip switch configuration options. These allow technicians to adjust system settings more easily during installation and commissioning. In addition, a built-in USB data recorder can store up to two weeks of operational performance data, significantly improving diagnostic capabilities. This feature simplifies troubleshooting by allowing technicians to analyze system behavior over time, reducing downtime and service costs.

Durability is another major focus of the design. All outdoor units in the SMART MULTI® range come equipped with factory-installed Seacoast Protection. This includes a coated base panel and a Blue Fin–coated outdoor heat exchanger, both designed to resist corrosion caused by salt, sulfur, and other airborne contaminants. The protection system is rated for 2,000 hours of exposure in accordance with ASTM B117 standards, making it especially suitable for coastal and industrial environments where equipment is exposed to harsh conditions.

From an efficiency and certification standpoint, the system performs strongly across multiple standards. All combinations of the SMART MULTI® lineup are ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate certified and recognized by NEEP (Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships). Select configurations also meet broader ENERGY STAR requirements, reinforcing the system’s position as a high-efficiency solution for both residential and light commercial applications in cold-weather regions.

Industry leaders emphasize that flexibility and reliability remain key drivers in HVAC system selection. The introduction of the 5-ton H2i unit addresses these priorities by enabling right-sized system design without compromising performance. Contractors benefit from simplified installation and configuration options, while building owners gain improved comfort control and long-term energy savings.

Speaking about the launch, Brinnon Williams, Vice President of Residential Business at METUS, highlighted the importance of system adaptability and real-world performance. “Contractors are looking for HVAC solutions they can trust from design through long-term operation,” Williams said. “The addition of a 5-ton H2i outdoor unit to the SMART MULTI platform reinforces our focus on flexibility, reliability, and real-world performance.”

Overall, the introduction of the new SMART MULTI® 5-ton H2i outdoor unit represents a strategic enhancement of METUS’s cold-climate HVAC offerings. By combining high heating performance, expanded zoning capability, improved diagnostics, and environmentally responsible refrigerant technology, the system is positioned to meet the evolving demands of modern building design. It strengthens the company’s commitment to delivering efficient, scalable, and climate-resilient HVAC solutions for a wide range of applications.
