“HaoJiang Pioneer” Tunneling Machine Officially Launched for Macao Light Rail East Line (North Section)
On May 7, the first shield tunneling machine for the Macao Light Rail East Line (North Section), named “HaoJiang Pioneer”, was officially launched, marking the project’s transition into the tunnel excavation phase.
The North Section of the East Line stretches approximately 2.74 kilometers, linking Zone A of the Macao Peninsula in the south to the Border Gate Port in the north. As a major public infrastructure initiative, this project plays a vital role in enhancing Macao’s rail transit system and improving daily mobility for residents.
A key challenge lies in the 2,077-meter underground tunnel, which must navigate densely built urban zones, restricted construction space, and complex hydrogeological conditions. These factors require multiple shield launching and receiving operations, demanding exceptional precision, adaptability to varying soil conditions, and comprehensive risk management.
To meet these demands, China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has developed the custom-designed “HaoJiang Pioneer”, an earth pressure balanced shield tunneling machine. This impressive piece of engineering is 87 meters long, weighs around 690 tons, and is equipped with a 7.28-meter diameter cutting wheel. The machine integrates intelligent monitoring systems and high-precision alignment correction, allowing it to analyze soil conditions in real-time and automatically adjust cutting speed and thrust, ensuring safer and more efficient tunneling while minimizing ground settlement.
Additional technological features include visualization cameras in the excavation chamber and automatic spraying systems, enhancing coordination and significantly reducing environmental impact on surrounding communities.
The Macao Light Rail East Line stands as a cornerstone in the region’s strategy for sustainable urban development, reflecting residents’ hopes for more efficient and accessible transportation. The successful launch of the “HaoJiang Pioneer” marks a milestone in Macao’s underground infrastructure journey, showcasing technological innovation and providing strong support for the city’s broader economic diversification goals.
