Safety innovation on the Sydney Metro

Plant equipment on Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport, Station Boxes and Tunnelling (SBT) project has been fitted with enclosed plastic cabins to help prevent dust inhalation and exposure to silica dust by enclosing and sealing plant cabins.

The CPB Contractors’ project has affectionately named the rollout of the safety cabins ‘Project Moke’ because of the adapted plant’s similarities to the classic 1960s Moke cars.

Project Moke has been applied to second-hand plant equipment with open cabins, such as agitator trucks, TSP’s and forklifts. The modified plant is now safer and ready for underground tunnelling works.

The safety innovation was developed by CPB Contractors’ Superintendent Mark Bawden and CPB Contractors’ Mechanical Supervisor Ben Brown.

CPB Contractors is delivering the SBT project in a joint venture with Ghella. Works include the design and construction of 9.8 kilometres of twin tunnels and excavations for stations at St Marys, Orchard Hills, Airport Business Park, Airport Terminal and Aerotropolis and service facilities at Claremont Meadows and Bringelly.
