Implenia Secures Contract for Challenging Underground S-Bahn Project in Central Frankfurt

Contract awarded for a central section of the Nordmainische S-Bahn in Frankfurt – a major, complex transport infrastructure project valued at well over EUR 200 million.

Implenia Awarded Major Contract for Frankfurt’s Nordmainische S-Bahn Tunnel Project

DB InfraGO AG, the infrastructure arm of Deutsche Bahn, has entrusted Implenia with a key section of the Nordmainische S-Bahn line beneath central Frankfurt. The major contract, valued at well over EUR 200 million, covers the underground stretch from Konstablerwache in the city centre to Fechenheim, passing through the new underground station “Frankfurt (Main) Ost (tief).”

Implenia’s responsibilities include constructing the initial “Trog” construction pit, the underground station pit at Frankfurt (Main) Ost (tief), several auxiliary pits, and related civil engineering structures. In addition, Implenia will use tunnel boring machines to drill two parallel tunnel tubes, each about 1.2 kilometres long. Extensive water management solutions will also be implemented.

Given the site’s location in Frankfurt’s densely populated inner city and the sustainability requirements of modern infrastructure projects, the work involves a wide range of specialised foundation services, which Implenia’s in-house experts will provide.

The company will complete the detailed building design phase by the end of 2025, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2026 and conclude by 2031.

Edwin Scherer, Head of the Civil Engineering Division at Implenia, expressed enthusiasm about the project:
“This complex and strategically significant project in the heart of Frankfurt aligns perfectly with our focus on sustainable infrastructure. With our deep experience and technical expertise, we’re proud to help enhance public transport in the densely populated Rhine-Main region.”

The Nordmainische S-Bahn project includes the construction of two new tracks between Frankfurt, Maintal, and Hanau, north of the River Main. It is a cornerstone initiative for expanding rail capacity in the Frankfurt transport hub. By improving regional transit connections, the project supports future mobility needs and helps achieve carbon reduction goals. Commuters and travellers can expect greater reliability, increased comfort, and improved punctuality.
