Redevelopment Raises the Bar for Educational Facilities

CPB Contractors has successfully completed the $31.2 million redevelopment of Kalamunda Senior High School in Western Australia, setting a new benchmark for modern educational facilities in the region. Delivered in collaboration with the Department of Housing and Works and TAG Architects.

The project enhances the learning environment for more than 600 students through the addition of a new teaching block and a state-of-the-art visual arts building. Executed by Broad Construction, now part of CPB Contractors’ building business in Western Australia.

The redevelopment involved intricate staging across a 5.3-hectare site to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing school activities. The two-storey visual arts building supports specialist creative programs, while the three-storey, 3,000m² teaching block features a concrete frame at ground level topped by steel framing and a Colorbond roof system.

The exteriors incorporate glazed facades, aluminium cladding, and compressed fibre cement panels, while interiors showcase lightweight partitions, timber panelling, and a combination of polished concrete, carpet, and vinyl flooring. Essential infrastructure such as in-ground fire mains, water, and electrical services were upgraded, complemented by the installation of new fire tanks and pumps.

Designed for a 100-year lifespan, both buildings underwent rigorous inspection and testing of all structural components, achieving zero harm events and full compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 4801 standards. Reflecting on the achievement, Western Australia Operations Manager Pieter Binkhorst commended the team’s dedication, noting that their technical excellence, collaboration, and commitment to community-oriented planning were key to the project’s success. The redevelopment embodies a student-first design philosophy, offering a contemporary and flexible educational setting that fosters creativity, collaboration, and long-term academic growth for future generations.
