It is with deep sadness that ACS Group, its Chairman Florentino Pérez, and the Board of Directors announce the passing of our esteemed board member, Javier Echenique, at the age of 73. His loss is profoundly felt by all of us who had the privilege to work alongside him, and his absence leaves an irreplaceable void within the ACS family.
Javier Echenique was not only an outstanding executive but also a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in shaping the success and global expansion of ACS Group over the past two decades. His exceptional dedication, wisdom, and integrity were integral to the company’s growth and development. We extend our most heartfelt condolences, support, and affection to his wife, children, grandchildren, family, and friends during this difficult time.
Born in Isaba, Navarre, in 1951, Javier Echenique earned his degree in Economics and Actuarial Sciences, laying the foundation for a distinguished career spanning multiple decades and industries. His expertise and leadership were widely recognized, allowing him to take on critical roles in some of Spain’s most important financial and industrial organizations.
Throughout his professional journey, Javier held key executive positions, leaving an indelible mark wherever he contributed. He served as Director and General Manager of Allianz-Ercos, where his strategic insight drove significant growth and operational improvements. His tenure at BBVA Group as General Manager further solidified his reputation as a highly skilled and forward-thinking executive. Javier later became Vice-Chairman of Banco Sabadell, where his leadership played a vital role in strengthening the bank’s position in the financial sector.
In addition to his achievements in banking and insurance, Javier contributed significantly to the industrial sector as a Director of Grupo Empresarial ENCE S.A. His depth of knowledge and unwavering commitment to excellence brought valuable perspectives to the organizations he served.
At the time of his passing, Javier Echenique held prominent roles within ACS Group. He served as a Director and member of the Executive Committee of ACS Group, Actividades de Construcción y Servicios S.A., and as Director of Dragados S.A., contributing his vast experience to the strategic direction and success of our operations. His profound understanding of business strategy and governance was pivotal in guiding the group’s ambitious projects and global endeavors.
Beyond his corporate leadership, Javier demonstrated a strong commitment to social causes and philanthropy. He was a member of the Board of Patrons of the Novia Salcedo Foundation and the Altuna Foundation, both of which work toward improving opportunities for young professionals and fostering economic and social development. Additionally, he served as Vice-Chairman and Coordinating Director of Telefónica S.A., playing a vital role in one of Spain’s leading multinational corporations.
Javier Echenique will be remembered not only for his extraordinary professional achievements but also for his integrity, humility, and steadfast commitment to the people and organizations he served. He was an invaluable leader, a trusted colleague, and a source of inspiration to all who had the honor of working alongside him.
