NCC Wins Two Major Asphalt Projects in Northern Sweden
NCC, one of the leading construction and infrastructure companies in the Nordic region, has secured two significant asphalt contracts in northern Sweden, further strengthening its role as a trusted partner in developing and maintaining the country’s critical transportation network. Together, the projects involve delivering nearly 150,000 tons of asphalt over several years and are valued at approximately SEK 175 million.
The assignments will be carried out between 2025 and 2028 and will not only improve vital road links but also set new standards in sustainable construction practices by leveraging NCC’s low-climate-impact asphalt technology.
Project One: Grimsmark–Gumboda Section
The first contract focuses on the Grimsmark–Gumboda section, where NCC will be responsible for supplying and laying approximately 66,000 tons of asphalt. Production will take place at NCC’s Skellefteå plant, a modern facility strategically located to support projects in Västerbotten County and surrounding regions.
Work is scheduled between 2025 and 2027. The contract is being carried out on behalf of NYAB, an established construction partner, with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) as the end client.
This section of roadway serves as a crucial transport corridor for both local commuters and heavy goods vehicles, making it essential that the road surface meets the highest standards of durability, safety, and environmental performance.
Project Two: European Route E10 – Avakko to Lappeasuando
The second contract, even larger in scope, concerns the European route E10, a highway of significant importance that stretches through northern Sweden and connects to Norway. On the section between Avakko and Lappeasuando, NCC will lay an estimated 82,000 tons of asphalt between 2025 and 2028.
In addition to paving, NCC has also been tasked with road reinforcement measures on this stretch. Reinforcement work is particularly critical in northern Sweden, where harsh winters, extreme temperature variations, and heavy freight traffic accelerate wear and tear on road surfaces. By integrating reinforcement into the project, NCC is helping ensure that the E10 remains safe, reliable, and resilient for decades to come.
The assignment is commissioned directly by the Swedish Transport Administration, underscoring NCC’s strong relationship with the national authority responsible for roads, railways, and transportation infrastructure.
Meeting Northern Sweden’s Unique Infrastructure Demands
The geographical and climatic conditions in northern Sweden place extraordinary demands on road construction and maintenance. Long winters, frequent freeze-thaw cycles, and the heavy reliance on road transport for both industry and daily life make it essential that asphalt is produced and applied with precision and durability in mind.
Johan Brus, Head of Department at NCC Industry, emphasized the company’s expertise and responsibility:
“NCC has long-standing experience of earthworks and paving, and these major contracts place high demands on logistics and delivery reliability. It is particularly important in northern Sweden that the roads are maintained in good condition for society to function properly, and I am pleased that NCC can play a part in improving the infrastructure here.”
This combination of logistical expertise, engineering innovation, and local knowledge is what enables NCC to deliver on complex assignments of this scale.
Sustainability at the Core
In line with Sweden’s ambitious climate goals and NCC’s own sustainability commitments, both contracts will be executed using asphalt with roughly half the climate footprint of conventional asphalt.
This is achieved through a combination of advanced methods:
- Resource efficiency: Optimizing the use of aggregates and recycled materials reduces reliance on virgin resources.
- Energy efficiency: Modern production methods minimize energy use during asphalt manufacturing.
- Reduced fossil fuels: Greater use of renewable energy sources and bio-based fuels lowers the overall carbon footprint.
Currently, 93 percent of NCC’s asphalt plants in Sweden are environmentally certified, reflecting the company’s industry-leading position in green construction practices. The asphalt for these projects will embody this commitment, ensuring that improvements in infrastructure also contribute to a more sustainable future.

By introducing lower-carbon asphalt in large-scale projects, NCC is not only reducing immediate emissions but also helping set new industry benchmarks for climate-smart road building.
The Strategic Value of the Contracts
Together, the two contracts represent an order value of approximately SEK 175 million, which will be registered under the NCC Industry business area in the third quarter of 2025. Beyond the financial significance, these assignments carry strategic importance for NCC’s ongoing growth and presence in the northern regions of Sweden.
Northern Sweden is currently undergoing significant transformation, with large-scale investments in green industry, mining, and renewable energy. This economic shift places further emphasis on the importance of robust infrastructure. By securing these contracts, NCC strengthens its position as a partner capable of delivering infrastructure that supports both industrial expansion and community well-being.
Enhancing Mobility and Economic Growth
Well-maintained road infrastructure is more than a technical necessity—it is a cornerstone of economic growth and quality of life. The Grimsmark–Gumboda and E10 projects will:
- Improve safety for road users by ensuring smoother, more durable surfaces.
- Enhance efficiency for freight and logistics companies that rely heavily on road transport in the north.
- Support regional connectivity, linking communities, industries, and cross-border trade routes.
- Reduce environmental impact, thanks to NCC’s climate-friendly asphalt technology.
For local residents, better roads mean shorter travel times, fewer vehicle repairs due to road wear, and enhanced access to services and opportunities. For industries operating in mining, forestry, and energy, the improvements mean greater reliability in transporting goods and materials.
NCC’s Broader Role in Sweden’s Infrastructure
These projects are part of NCC’s broader role in shaping Sweden’s future infrastructure. From highways to urban roads and industrial access routes, NCC combines decades of technical expertise with an increasing focus on sustainable construction.
By integrating innovation, climate responsibility, and reliability, NCC continues to demonstrate why it remains one of the leading asphalt and road construction companies in Scandinavia. The Grimsmark–Gumboda and E10 projects are more than contracts—they are investments in the future resilience and sustainability of northern Sweden’s infrastructure.
