Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US Introduces New Low-GWP Commercial VRF Product Line with R-32 Refrigerant
Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US (METUS), a leading provider of all-electric, all-climate heating and cooling solutions, today announced the launch of its new commercial Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) product line, featuring a low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant. The new line is designed in anticipation of evolving industry regulations on refrigerants and is set to be available in selected markets in early 2026.
The new VRF systems utilize R-32, a next-generation refrigerant with a significantly lower GWP compared to traditional options. This move aligns with METUS’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and global sustainability initiatives, including adherence to the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act. Starting January 1, 2026, low-GWP, A2L refrigerants such as R-32 are expected to become the standard for VRF systems in the United States.
David Archer, Vice President of Commercial Business at METUS, emphasized the importance of this transition: “As the HVAC industry navigates this important refrigerant shift, we are committed to helping building owners, engineers, contractors, and facility managers adopt more sustainable technologies without compromising performance. R-32 offers an ideal balance of efficiency and reduced environmental impact, supporting the industry’s broader move toward lower-GWP solutions.”
Beyond the refrigerant update, METUS’s new commercial VRF systems incorporate a range of enhancements designed to improve energy efficiency, reliability, serviceability, and occupant comfort. Each system is equipped with advanced sensors capable of detecting refrigerant leaks in indoor units. These sensors can automatically stop refrigerant flow to affected units, providing an additional layer of safety and reassurance for building owners and facility managers.
The systems also deliver improved integrated energy efficiency ratio (IEER) ratings for cooling and stronger heating coefficient of performance (COP) scores, which may result in significant operational cost savings over time. Enhanced performance across a broader temperature range ensures consistent comfort even in extreme environmental conditions, while durability upgrades extend system longevity and maintain reliability throughout the equipment lifecycle.
Installation and maintenance have been simplified in the new product line, with design improvements that streamline setup, reduce labor requirements, and minimize downtime. These enhancements aim to provide contractors and engineers with VRF solutions that are not only environmentally responsible but also easier to deploy and maintain in commercial settings.
METUS plans a phased introduction of the new R-32 refrigerant systems. During the first half of 2026, VRF products using R-410A will continue to be available alongside the new R-32 options. This approach ensures that contractors, engineers, and building owners have flexibility in selecting the VRF systems best suited for their specific applications, while also transitioning toward lower-GWP refrigerants in compliance with upcoming regulations.
As building owners increasingly seek sustainable and energy-efficient HVAC solutions, METUS’s commitment to low-GWP technology positions the company at the forefront of the industry’s evolution. The integration of R-32 refrigerant into its commercial VRF line represents not only compliance with regulatory changes but also a proactive step toward reducing the environmental impact of heating and cooling systems across the United States.
