Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has established a dedicated Renewable EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) business within its Infrastructure Projects segment by carving it out from its Power Transmission & Distribution business.
The global shift towards clean energy has gained momentum, with decarbonized electricity playing a crucial role in combating climate change. Technological advancements in renewable energy, particularly in solar and wind, have driven this trend, and the renewable energy sector is expected to grow significantly. The variability of renewable sources demands a hybrid approach, combining different sources with energy storage solutions to ensure consistent, on-demand power supply. As a result, new market structures like capacity and flexibility markets are emerging.
India is actively promoting renewable energy, aiming to increase the share of non-fossil fuel-based electricity. The country views green jobs and renewable growth as key to achieving its vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat) and promoting climate justice globally. Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies in India have outlined clear capacity addition targets, and several initiatives, such as the Green Energy Corridors, are underway.
The Middle East, with its high solar irradiance, ample land, and alignment with peak cooling demand, is ideal for solar energy generation. This region, along with adjacent areas like the SAARC, ASEAN, CIS, and African countries, is witnessing significant investments in renewable energy.
L&T is already a global leader with a portfolio of 22 GWp in renewable EPC projects, including Ground Mounted Solar, Floating Solar, Wind Balance of Plant projects, and 3 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems. Combined with its Grid and Digital Energy Solutions, L&T has earned a reputation for delivering large-scale renewable projects on time and safely.
L&T is involved in some of the world’s largest renewable energy projects, such as the 700 MW Ar Rass Solar PV IPP and the 2,000 MW Ar Rass-2 Solar PV IPP in Saudi Arabia, as well as the 1.6 GW Sudair solar plant. Recently, L&T announced orders for two more plants with a total capacity of 3.5 GWac. The company is also constructing the power and grid systems for one of the world’s largest green hydrogen plants at NEOM and advancing renewable infrastructure with projects like a 250 MWp solar PV plant at the Amaala Project in Saudi Arabia. In Dubai, L&T is executing Phase 6 of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.
In India, L&T has completed iconic renewable energy projects, including the recently commissioned 90 MW Omkareshwar Floating Solar project and the country’s first grid-scale solar cum storage project, among others.
To enhance management visibility and ensure seamless integration of resources, L&T has created the Renewable EPC business as part of its construction verticals. Mr. A. Ravindran, Senior Vice President at Larsen & Toubro, has been appointed as the Head of the Renewable Business.
L&T’s Chairman & Managing Director, Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan, commented on the development, stating, “The growth of our renewable EPC business has accelerated in recent years. Our early start and investments have positioned us uniquely in the sustainable energy infrastructure value chain. This new vertical will provide increased autonomy, customer proximity, and leadership oversight, enabling us to excel further in this promising space.
