Laing O’Rourke Celebrates Achievements with Infrastructure Sustainability Council

Laing O’Rourke Australia recently hosted the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) Certification and Knowledge Sharing event at their North Sydney office, celebrating the remarkable sustainability achievements across the industry.

During the event, the Sydney Central Station Metro (CSM) project was honored with a certified IS As Built v1.2 Leading rating from ISC. The project earned this top-tier rating based on several key accomplishments, including:

  • 31.9% reduction in energy usage
  • 24.2% reduction in water consumption
  • 64.61% substitution of potable water with non-potable sources
  • 86.6% of the workforce employed in local jobs
  • 50% absolute replacement of Portland cement in ready-mix concrete
  • Volunteering 1,100 hours in community initiatives
  • Collaborating with 17 supply-chain partners on local projects
  • Raising over $130,000 through fundraising campaigns
  • Over $20 million invested in Aboriginal Participation, exceeding contractual targets.

The CSM team also proudly became the first construction project in Australia to specify GECA’s Waste Collection Services ecolabel certification.

Additionally, the third tranche of the Transport for NSW Transport Access Program (TAP)—covering the Pymble, Erskineville, Normanhurst, Thornleigh, St Peters, and Doonside projects—was awarded a certified IS Design v1.2 Excellent rating. This achievement was driven by the use of renewable energy and eco-friendly products, with the project predicting a 38% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions and a 31% reduction in operational water usage compared to the base case.

Furthermore, Transport for Tomorrow, a partnership between Transport for NSW, Laing O’Rourke, and KBR for the More Trains, More Services Stage 2 South project, received a certified IS Design v1.2 Excellent rating. The project is expected to achieve a 49.2% reduction in carbon emissions and 83.2% use of renewable energy over its lifecycle. It also introduced a modular Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) temporary platform, recognized by ISC as an Australian first innovation for the rail construction industry.

Congratulations to all teams involved for their dedication to advancing sustainable outcomes across projects, the industry, and local communities.
