Granite Secures Sixth Highway 101 Mainline Segment to Ease Traffic Congestion in Santa Barbara

Granite (NYSE:GVA) has secured a $38 million contract from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for the Segment 4E South project. This initiative will add peak-hour High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes and rebuild all existing elements of Highway 101 through southern Santa Barbara. The project, funded by Caltrans and local sources, was included in Granite’s second-quarter Capital Allocation Plan (CAP). This is the sixth segment of Highway 101 awarded to Granite under its Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC) contract. For over five years, Granite has collaborated with Caltrans and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) to enhance Highway 101.

Segments in Carpinteria and Summerland have been completed, while the segment south of Summerland is expected to be finished by the end of this year. Multiple segments in Montecito are currently in progress, with a projected completion date in 2026. The Segment 4E South contract will seamlessly integrate with the Montecito segments, enhancing project efficiency and synergy.

The project not only aims to improve traffic flow but also emphasizes sustainability. Materials removed from existing structures will be recycled into 13,000 tons of aggregate base. Additionally, 11,800 cubic yards of concrete for paving will be produced from an onsite batch plant, using 19,000 tons of materials sourced from Granite’s nearby aggregate facilities. Granite’s Gardner and Santa Paula Hot Plants will supply 12,850 tons of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) for the project.

“This project represents a significant step in reducing traffic congestion along this vital corridor,” said Larry Camilleri, Granite Vice President of Regional Operations. “We are eager to collaborate with Caltrans and SBCAG to deliver another crucial project for the community and the traveling public.”

Work on this segment is set to begin in September 2024 and is expected to be completed by October 2026.
