Granite Awarded $45 Million Contract to Modernize John Wilkie Safety Rest Area on I-40
Granite (NYSE:GVA) has received a $45 million contract from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to reconstruct and upgrade the John Wilkie Safety Roadside Rest Area along the Interstate 40 (I-40) corridor. The funding for the project, part of Granite’s second-quarter CAP, will be provided by Caltrans. This initiative is the fifth in a series aimed at improving safety and infrastructure on I-40, with the new rest area designed to offer a modern and safe space for travelers, given the area’s significant distance from the nearest town.
Previous enhancements have included median fill-ins, slope flattening, and the creation of recovery areas for vehicles that leave the highway.
Granite Vice President of Regional Operations, Bill Moore, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing safety on I-40. “Our continued collaboration with Caltrans has strengthened our relationship, and we are eager to contribute further to this crucial infrastructure project.”
The project will utilize materials from Desert Cities Asphalt, including 12,200 tons of asphalt for parking lots and ramps, ensuring high quality and durability for the new facility.
Work is scheduled to commence in September 2024 and conclude by January 2026.
