The renovation and expansion of the Zwanenburg Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Netherlands marks the culmination of years of collaboration between the Rijnland District Water Control Board and its partners, including BAM Energy & Water. To celebrate the project’s successful completion, Rijnland hosted exclusive guided tours for stakeholders, highlighting the achievements, sharing knowledge, and showing appreciation for the teams involved.
In Haarlem-Schalkwijk, participants were given an in-depth explanation of the new pumping station and its critical role in the regional water system. Meanwhile, in Zwanenburg, visitors explored the fully renovated and expanded treatment plant, where the results of technical innovation and long-term cooperation were clearly on display.
Enhanced Capacity and Sustainability
High Water Authority Harry Kortman emphasized the impact of the upgrade: “With the expansion and renovation of the treatment plant, we can now treat and transport more wastewater. Centralizing wastewater treatment in one location makes the process more sustainable. Following the renovation, energy consumption is expected to drop by 15%, and the increased treatment capacity supports anticipated population growth in the region.”
Going forward, sludge—the by-product of wastewater—will be processed at the Haarlem Waarderpolder treatment plant, whose renovation is already underway. There, sludge will be transformed into biogas, further advancing Rijnland’s commitment to sustainability.
A Model of Collaboration

Working alongside the Rijnland District Water Control Board and contractors VOBI and Mobilis TBI was both enjoyable and highly successful. In a complex environment, we installed new transport and sludge pipelines, enhancing the efficiency of wastewater treatment and supporting a sustainable future for residents in Zwanenburg, Haarlem, and Heemstede.”
