Budimex Unveils First Dragon 2 Locomotive Powered by 100% Green Energy
Budimex has officially received and certified its first Dragon 2 locomotive, marking a significant addition to the company’s fleet and a first among construction firms involved in railway modernization and construction projects in Poland. This cutting-edge locomotive will operate entirely on green energy.
The E6ACTadnb Dragon 2 is a state-of-the-art, two-cabin, six-axle universal locomotive built to comply with the 2014 Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI). Designed primarily for freight transport, it offers a power output of 5 MW and operates on a 3kV DC overhead line, reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h.
Budimex plans to utilize the Dragon 2 to haul material and supply trains essential for railway infrastructure projects across the country.
“The key advantage of the Dragon 2 is its exceptionally high tractive force,” said Maciej Olek, Member of the Management Board at Budimex SA. “Its weight, advanced anti-skid system, and individual axle drives—each powered by an 842 kW asynchronous motor—enable it to efficiently move heavy freight trains.” He also noted the locomotive’s enhanced versatility thanks to a “Dual Power” diesel module, which allows it to operate in areas without overhead power lines.
Advanced and Eco-Friendly Technology
Equipped with the latest safety features, including ETCS Level 2 and dual-system radio communication compatible with GSM-R and VHF networks, the Dragon 2 represents a new standard in rail transport. Budimex has also partnered with PGE Energetyka Kolejowa to ensure that the locomotive runs on 100% renewable energy.
The locomotive is scheduled to make its public debut during Children’s Day celebrations at the Warszawa Zachodnia station on Friday, June 6. It will then begin regular freight operations in early July.
Ongoing Investment in Modern Equipment
Budimex continues to invest heavily in modernizing its machinery fleet, allocating more than PLN 100 million annually—of which PLN 80 million goes toward vehicles and machinery. The company now operates over 300 units of construction equipment for both road and rail projects.
The arrival of the Dragon 2 highlights Budimex’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence in the railway construction sector.
