Argenteuil Hospital, located in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, has awarded a contract to a consortium of prime contractors and construction firms led by Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, to modernize and consolidate its facilities. Work has already commenced on this major project, which will result in a state-of-the-art, 77,000 m² hospital complex. The total project cost is €235 million, with Bouygues Construction’s portion valued at €129 million.
By 2030, the New Argenteuil Hospital will consist of a single building that centralizes almost all care services currently scattered across various structures, streamlining staff workflows, improving resource allocation, and enhancing patient care. The project, designed by Brunet Saunier & Associés with assistance from BaSo Architectures, will be executed in two phases over six years. The first phase, a 30,000 m² extension to the east of the existing Madeleine Brès building, is slated for completion in April 2027. The second phase, adding approximately 28,000 m² to the west, will be finished by July 2030.
Key features include an upgraded emergency department capable of handling 100,000 annual admissions, more than 500 beds, and an enhanced level 3 maternity unit. The intensive care and critical care units will also be consolidated, ensuring greater preparedness for public health crises.
Externally, the project forms part of a broader urban redevelopment plan, which includes 7,000 m² of green space, in line with BiodiverCity© certification. New dedicated lanes will streamline traffic for emergency services, staff, and the public. The hospital’s parking capacity will expand to 1,400 spaces by 2030.
At its peak, the project will employ 250 workers on-site. Furthermore, 20% of the subcontracted work will be awarded to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and local artisans, promoting regional economic growth. The consortium also plans to implement a social integration initiative, accounting for 5% of total hours worked, offering local residents valuable training and on-site experience.
In line with its commitment to reducing the environmental impact, the New Argenteuil Hospital project will take several sustainability measures. These include:
- Reusing the existing emergency facilities and parts of the Viguié building, saving 3,200 tonnes of concrete
- Utilizing bio-sourced materials, particularly in exterior joinery
- Recycling and repurposing materials on-site: 97% of materials from demolition will be recycled, asphalt will be reincorporated into new roads, and existing concrete slabs will be reused in the new construction.
Albin Dargery, Executive Vice President at Bouygues Bâtiment France, commented: “This modernization of the Centre Hospitalier d’Argenteuil is a cornerstone of our corporate mission. Building for life means creating cutting-edge healthcare infrastructure tailored to the needs of patients and medical staff. Our goal is to make the New Argenteuil Hospital a benchmark in innovation, performance, and environmental stewardship.”
Bouygues Construction will lead the consortium, partnering with Inéo and Axima (subsidiaries of Equans) for electrical, HVAC, and plumbing work, and Premys (a Colas subsidiary) for demolition. With over 20 years of experience in healthcare infrastructure, Bouygues Construction is also currently engaged in projects such as the New Trousseau Hospital in Tours, the Mother and Child Unit at Rennes University Hospital, and international projects including hospitals in Benin, Morocco, and London.
