A groundbreaking ceremony has officially launched the construction of the first phase of Kirklees Council’s major regeneration project in Huddersfield town centre, known as Our Cultural Heart.
The construction firm BAM has begun work on transforming the former Queensgate Market building into a modern food hall and library. Both spaces will open onto a new public square designed for outdoor cultural events and community gatherings. To mark this milestone, senior officials from Kirklees Council, including Council Leader Councillor Carole Pattison, joined project partners from Turner & Townsend and BAM.
Paul Cleminson, pre-construction director at BAM, expressed enthusiasm for the project, saying: “This is an exciting development for Huddersfield that will leave a lasting legacy. We are committed to ensuring our projects benefit the local community, and this one is no exception.” Cleminson highlighted BAM’s focus on boosting the local economy through employing subcontractors from Kirklees, sourcing materials locally, and creating job and apprenticeship opportunities. BAM also plans to engage with local schools and colleges to provide educational opportunities related to the project.
Councillor Pattison shared her excitement, stating: “It’s a proud moment to see the main construction of Our Cultural Heart begin after years of planning and consultation. This development will attract more visitors to Huddersfield, driving growth and investment across the borough. Now that the initial preparation is complete, the transformation will soon be visible, sparking pride and anticipation for what’s ahead.”
Prior to this, BAM completed significant site preparations, including the removal of internal fixtures, market stalls, and asbestos from the site.
In addition to this phase, Kirklees Council has submitted updated plans for the second phase of the project, which will focus on converting the former library building on Princess Alexandra Walk into a flagship museum and art gallery.
