Balfour Beatty has been awarded approximately $9 million (£6.8 million) by Civic Communities to advance the next phase of the City of San Diego’s Park Boulevard at-Grade Crossing project.
Situated near Petco Park and within the railroad corridors of Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF), San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad (SDIV), and the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), this new at-grade railroad crossing will establish a crucial vehicular link between Harbor Drive and Park Boulevard in downtown San Diego.
This project is part of a $27 million (£20.4 million) investment aimed at completing key public infrastructure for the ballpark. Balfour Beatty will handle the demolition of existing tracks and overhead catenary systems (OCS), as well as the removal of ballast. The scope of work includes excavation, soil monitoring, the construction of new railroad tracks, installation of OCS improvements, and the setup of railroad signal infrastructure.

This contract marks one of two phases in the Park Boulevard at-Grade Crossing project. The final phase will involve building new roadways, irrigation, landscaping, grade crossing protection equipment, and traffic signal upgrades. Both the crossing and railroad signaling systems will be tested and finalized in this phase, which will commence once construction for the rail package is underway.
Construction for this rail package is set to begin in Fall 2024, with an anticipated completion in Summer 2025.
