Balfour Beatty, working on behalf of National Highways, has achieved a key milestone in the A63 Castle Street Improvement Scheme by successfully completing a traffic switch in the eastern section of the project.
This milestone marks the beginning of Phase 3, which focuses on the stretch between the underpass and Marketplace Junction in the city centre. The traffic switch, completed on schedule, will enable Balfour Beatty to proceed with lane two and central reserve works.
Will Neaves, Balfour Beatty’s A63 Project Director, commented: “This is a pivotal moment for the project. After completing the bulk excavation for the underpass, where we reached depths of seven metres, the traffic switch now gives us access to the central reserve to continue lane development.”
He added: “We’ve made strong progress, and the team is preparing for a significant push toward the end of the year as we focus on the central reserve and begin laying the base slab in the underpass.”
Once completed, the A63 Castle Street improvements will enhance port access, reduce congestion, improve safety, and strengthen connections between the city centre and nearby tourist and recreational areas.
