Balfour Beatty to protect homes and businesses in Perth and Kinross through £27 million flood defence scheme The project, awarded through the SCAPE Civil Engineering Framework, aims to construct 2.8 kilometers of river walls and embankments along the Ruchill River, River Earn, and River Lednock, areas prone to significant flooding.
Designed to meet a ‘1 in 200-year flood’ protection standard, the defences will safeguard nearly 200 homes and businesses, offering protection against severe flooding events with only a 0.5% chance of occurring annually.
As part of its commitment to community impact, Balfour Beatty will dedicate 50 hours to visiting local schools, educating students on sustainable construction, the flood scheme’s benefits, and career opportunities in the industry.
This project follows Balfour Beatty’s successful completion of the Almondbank flood protection scheme in 2018, which protected over 150 properties along the River Almond.
Hector MacAulay MBE, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s regional business in Scotland, expressed pride in continuing their partnership with Perth and Kinross Council: “This scheme will protect properties, businesses, and infrastructure, while future-proofing the town for generations to come.”
Councillor Grant Laing, Leader of Perth and Kinross Council, welcomed the partnership with Balfour Beatty, stating, “The complex design will offer peace of mind to those who have suffered from repeated flooding in Comrie.”
Construction is set to begin shortly, with completion expected by Autumn 2026. At its peak, the project will employ around 100 workers, including 10 apprentices, graduates, and trainees.
