AECOM Chosen as Lead Designer for North Houston Highway Improvement Project

AECOM (NYSE: ACM), a leading global infrastructure consulting firm, has been chosen by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to provide design services for Segment 3C-4 of the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP). This multi-segment project focuses on redesigning I-45N between downtown Houston and the North Sam Houston Tollway, with the goal of alleviating traffic congestion, improving commuter safety, and enhancing flood resilience.

“We’re thrilled to continue our strong partnership with TxDOT on one of Houston’s most significant infrastructure projects in the past decade,” said Matt Crane, AECOM’s chief executive for the U.S. West region. “Our team’s deep understanding of the area’s infrastructure needs and proven track record with TxDOT will be invaluable in delivering critical upgrades that boost the local economy and improve connectivity along this key corridor.”

AECOM’s responsibilities for the project include designing four express lanes, realigning six main lanes of I-45, and expanding the current single managed lane to four from west of Houston Avenue to west of White Oak Bayou. The project will also feature upgraded drainage systems to ensure the roadway remains functional during severe weather conditions.

“With decades of experience in highway and road projects for all levels of government, AECOM has become the leading transportation firm in the industry,” said Mark Southwell, chief executive of AECOM’s global Transportation business. “We are proud to collaborate with TxDOT as they undertake a record $148 billion transportation investment program. Our team will apply its world-class expertise to deliver a safe, flood-resilient roadway design that aligns with Texas’ ambitious infrastructure goals.”

Upon completion, the NHHIP aims to expand multi-modal transit options by adding more high-occupancy vehicle lanes to encourage ridesharing, as well as introducing bike lanes and pedestrian pathways. The project is also expected to improve regional freight mobility, essential to Houston’s growth, particularly as its ports continue to expand.
